The buildings are close together and very high because there is not a lot of land space for wide buildings. Apartments and skyscrapers are found in urban communities.
There are many different forms of transportation in urban communities such as subway trains, busses, taxis and cars.
Some industrial areas are ports for transportation systems to take materials to and from the city. Urban communities will often have industrial areas which are made up of large factories making things for the communities to use or ship to other communities.
Many people travel to urban communities everyday to work or shop or do other business. This is a commercial area.
People outside of the urban community, live in a residential area.
A rural community has more space and buildings are spread apart. In a farming community neighbours are separated by large fields where they grow crops.
Rural communities have small commercial areas where local people can do business. Businesses may include a grocery store, medical office, gas station or a Tim Horton’s! Fishing and Forestry are two industries found in rural areas.
People can buy produce directly from the farmers at markets in or close to a rural town.
Transportation in rural communities may include tractors, trucks and farm machinery.

Mapping Skills A map is a tool to help us get around our community! There are many types of maps and they all have special features. The important features of maps are: Title Labels Scale Grid Lines Compass Rose Legend/Key with Symbols Colour
Grid I help to locate things on a map by using coordinates (letters and numbers)
Labels I tell the names of places or things on a map! Title I tell what the map is about.
Legend I have symbols that represent important things on a map!
Compass Rose A compass rose is a very important part of a map because it shows us the cardinal directions which help us to know where we are going.
Colour and Line are very important features of a map. Colour can indicate different sections, countries and line can show rivers, roads and boundaries.
Scale I’m like a little ruler that measures the distance between two places on a map!
