Writing Linear Equations Day 1
Bell Ringer 1/17 Write the equation of the line in slope intercept form. Identify slope (m) and y-intercept (b).
What have we learned thus far? • y = mx + b and what the variables mean • How to find slope through an equation (m) and from a graph () and from two coordinate points ( • The four different types of slope • How to graph using slope intercept form • How to write an equation by looking at the graph
Today’s Objectives • Today we will learn how to write a linear equation (y = mx + b) given the slope (m) and a coordinate point
What two things do I need to write an equation of a line? Slope (m) and b (y intercept)
Graphing vs Algebraically • I will first show you how you can use a point and a slope on graph to find the equation • Then I will show how to solve it algebraically
We know the slope and now we have ‘b’. What would our equation be?
Steps: Writing Linear Equations • Label your slope (m), and coordinate point (x, y) • Write your equation: y = mx + b • Substitute proper numbers for ‘m’, ‘x’, and ‘y’ • Solve for ‘b’ • Re-write the equation with ‘m’ and ‘b’
Just watch Write an equation in slope intercept form when given the slope and a point the line goes through. Slope = 3 , (-1, 5)
Just watch Write an equation in slope intercept form when given the slope and a point the line goes through. m = 5, (1, 9)
Guided Practice 1. Write an equation in slope intercept form when given the slope and a point the line goes through. Slope = 2, (-3, -4)
Guided Practice 2. Write an equation in slope intercept form when given the slope and a point the line goes through. Slope = , ( 6, 1)
Guided Practice 3. Write an equation in slope intercept form when given the slope and a point the line goes through. m= -4 , ( 2, -6)
Closure Could you write an equation of a line given two coordinate points? How do you think you would complete that? (*HINT* )
Today’s Objectives • Today we will learn how to write a linear equation given two coordinate points
REVIEW!!!! • Given two coordinate points, can we find the slope? YES!! Ex) (2, 6) and (-1, 5)
Find the slope : Independent (5 minutes on timer) ( 3, 7) and ( 8, -4) (-1, 6) and ( 3, 5) ( 3, 8) and ( 5, 10) ( 2, 4) and ( -3, 7)
Independent Practice • Try the problems on the back independently. Good luck
Begin Independent Practice sheet • This will be homework (only 4 problems)
