THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD HYPOTHESIS EXPERIMENT PROBLEM OBSERVATION CONCLUSION
State the problem: The problem is a question that the scientist is trying to find an answer to. What is the effect of ________________ on ________________? Independent variable Dependent variable Example the red color light What is the effect of____________________________ On________________________________? plant growth
Propose a Hypothesis A hypothesis is a prediction about the possible answer to the problem based upon both research an observations. If____________________________ then _________________________ Independent variable Dependent variable If ___________________________ Then__________________________. I expose a plant under red color light the plant will grow faster
Design an experiment: to test the Hypothesis. 1. I take a cup and fill in with 6 cm of soil, I put 3 seeds of beans and cover them up with soil up to the rim. Finally, I make pressure on the soil leaving 1 cm of the cup out of soil. 2. I water the cup with 50 mL of water. 3. I label the cup including the name of the components of the group, kind of light I expose the cup: red light color, and date. 4. I place the cup in a container that is covered with red cellophane, to obtain red light color, during 2 weeks. 5. I water the plant every 2 days with 15 ml of water. 6. I measure the plant height, number of leaves, and stem thickness • I take a cup and fill in with 6 cm of soil, i put 3 seeds of beans and cover them up with soil up to the rim. Finally, I make pressure on the soil leaving 1 cm of the cup out of soil. • I water the cup with 50 ml of water. • I label the cup including the name of the components of the group, kind of light I expose the cup: sunlight color, and date. • I place the cup in a container that is covered with transparent cellophane, to obtain sunlight light, during 2 weeks. • I water the plant every 2 days with 15 mL of water • I measure the plant height, number of leaves, and stem thickness Experimental group Control or controlled group
Independent Variable: You-Change-It Variable. Dependent Variable: You-measure-it Variable. Constants: Things you will keep the same between your groups. A controlled experiment must test only the group with the Independent Variable. The control is the same experiment but does not contain the variable.
Make observations The scientist makes observations and collects data. Observations include measurements. Data is organized by diagrams, tables, graphs, equations,…
State a Conclusion The conclusion is the answer to the problem. Theories and scientific laws result only when many scientists repeatedly reach the same conclusion.
