The Creation • Chaos-dark and formless void • Gaia-great Mother Earth • Uranus-the starry sky • Children of Uranus and Gaia- • 3 brothers-Hundred Handed-too terrifying to look at, Uranus locks them up under the Earth • 3 Cyclops-giants with huge single eye, also shut away • 12 Titans- 6 sons, 6 daughters-Larger than mortals, had beauty and majesty; Gaia wanted them to avenge Uranus for his cruel treatment of her other children

Chaos Gaia Uranus 12 Titans- Boys- Oceanus, Hyperion, Coeus, Cronus, Crius and Iapetus Hundred Handed- Gyges, Cottus, and Briares 3 Cyclops- Argos, Steropes, and Brontes Girls-Mnemosyne, Tethys, Theia, Rhea, Phoebe, and Themis Cronus Rhea Poseidon Hades Hestia Demeter Hera Zeus The Olympians- lived on Mt. Olympus

  4. The war in heaven The Olympians Defeat the Titans

What happened? • Uranus told Cronus he would be overthrown by his own children, so Cronus swallowed Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseiden • Rhea hid 6th child, Zeus. • As an adult, Zeus gave Cronus an herb that caused him to throw up the 5 other children • Zeus and his siblings, the Olympians, were at war with the Titans until Prometheus and Zeus freed Cronus’ monstrous siblings who defeated Cronus

  6. Then… • Poseidon- became God of the Sea • Hades- became God of the Underworld and was not allowed back on Mt. Olympus • Zeus- became King of the Gods • Zeus had many children • Many were Gods and Goddesseswith special abilities

  7. Olympians Hestia (gave up chair to Dionysus) Poseidon Zeus Hera Demeter Hephaestusand Ares Aphrodite (mom-Dione) Dionysus (mom-Semele) Apollo and Artemis (twins) (mom-Letto) Hermes (mom-Maia) Athena (pops out of Zeus’ head)

Gods and Goddesses of... • Poseidon-God of Seas and Rivers • Hestia-Goddess of Home and Hearth • Hera-Goddess of Women and Marriage • Demeter-Goddess of Fruits, Grasses, and Grains • Zeus-God of Sky and Everything • Aphrodite-Goddess of Love and Beauty • Artemis-Goddess of Hunting, Unmarried Girls, Animals, and Moon • Apollo-God of Music, Medicine, Archery, and Young Unmarried Men • Athena-Goddess of Wisdom and Battle • Hermes-God of Merchants, Bankers, Thieves, Fortune-Tellers, and Heralds • Dionysus-God of Wine and Celebration • Hephaestus-God of Goldsmiths, Jewelers, Blacksmiths, Masons, and Carpenters. • Ares-God of War
