Setting • The setting is in an small town named Silverlake. It is a very dry place, they have lots of droughts, and there isn't any neighbors for miles. There is a lot of dust storms also. It is important to the story because if the place wasn’t dry and there are no dust storms there wouldn’t be a chance to distract Saba and Lugh so the Tonton could take them. The time is the future and they got worse instead of better.
Conflict • The conflict is man vs. man. There is a place where they take people and they are under the influence of a drug. They worship and man named Pinch. One day Pinches soldiers come to where Saba and Lugh lived and they take Lugh because he was a 18 and he was born in midwinter. Therefore, Saba goes out to try to find him before they sacrifice him for the king in midsummer because they believe that the spirit and strength helps the king live another 6 years. Then they find another 18 year old boy that was born in midwinter.
Saba, pa, Lugh, and Emmi live in a deserted city. When they are talking they see a dust storm and they start to run home but Saba and Lugh don’t get into the cellar in time. After the storm is over some men come and take Lugh. Pa comes out and dies trying to fight for him. Saba takes Emmi to a friend but she escapes and goes with Saba. They get captured by an old couple and they use Saba to cage fight and Emmi as a slave. Eventually Saba blows up they fighting camp and escapes to find her brother with the help of Jack and some friends. When they finally get Lugh Saba kills pinch. Summary of Plot
Theme • Theme: If you look around there are always people to help you. • Text Evidence 1: Jack says “ I will always help you” page 457 • Text Evidence 2: the free hawks come to help her get her brother page 438 • Text Evidence 3: DeMalo cuts the rope that ties her hands together page 439.
The point of view is in first person because Saba is the main character and it is telling the story how she feels and what she sees. This helps because if not you wouldn’t know what she was planning to do, if she trusts certain people, and how she feels when she is fighting. If she would have chosen another point of view it would have been in less detail, and it wouldn’t have the same ending because the Saba says how she feels about jack. Point of View
This heart necklace is a symbol for the book because it affected the story a lot. It was a heart stone necklace that Saba friend mercy gave he. Mercy said it would get hot when she was next to her hearts desire. Without it Saba wouldn’t have found jack in the explosion and without him she wouldn’t have found Lugh. Symbolism
I would recommend reading this book because it is very interesting and you don’t want to stop reading. You never know what is going to happen because the events always change. Recommendation
