  1. Passive and Active Solar Models 8th Grade Enrichment Fall, 2012

  2. Samples • Models are made of ¼ “ foam core • Models are built at a scale of ¼” = 1’ • Models display passive solar design principals • Students built the models in Google SketchUp Here are some examples :

  3. Solar House: David Passive Solar Features of the House: 1: South Facing Windows 120 ft square in total. 2: Vent on south side 3: Clerestory windows 4: one small skylight as a result of failed lightbulb installation. Active Solar Features: 1: Ceiling Fan 2: Attempted solar lightbulb -> stolen, created small skylight Square footage of the floor of the house in total: 1000 feet square.

  4. Dominic • House Specs: • 50’x20’ floor surface area • 90x30x50 degree roof structure • 120 square foot of windows • 4 different windows and two doors. • Passive Solar Features: • South Facing windows • Overhang on roof • Ventilation on back • .12 of surface area windows • Active Solar Features • Solar panels • Small Fan • DC Motor

  5. Kade Passive Solar Features1. South facing windows- Yes2. Overhang of south side roof- Yes3. Clerestory windows- No4. Sky lights and sola-tubes- No 5. North side vents- YesActive Solar Features1. Ceiling fans- No2. Sky lights- Yes3. Water features- NoSquare footage of the floor- 988 square feetSquare footage of the south windows- 118.56 square feet

  6. Carolina Passive and Active Solar Design Passive Solar Features1. South facing windows2. Overhang of south side roof3. Clerestory windows4. Sky lights

  7. Passive solar features: Passive solar design integrates a combination of building features to reduce or even eliminate the need for mechanical cooling and heating and daytime artificial lighting. Designers and builders pay particular attention to the sun to minimize heating and cooling needs. Some passive solar features I used in my house were windows facing south. Over my windows I had an over hang facing the south roof and I used Clerestory windows. Active solar features: Then I used active solar features in my house. Active solar is the design of buildings that contain mechanical devices, which transport the absorbed solar energy to other locations in the building, or convert solar energy into electricity. So I used sky lights and solar panels in my house. Square footage of the floor: 514.5807 Feet ² Square footage of the south windows: 61.52 Feet ² Mike

  8. Passive and Active Solar Design Report by Andrew   Passive Solar Features1. South facing windows 2. Overhang of south side roof: planed but rafters were to shortActive Solar Features (2 watts on, 1 watt used, infinite watts possible)1. Ceiling fans: possible2. Sky lights: would have to be small3. Water features: possible 4. Highly effective light: yep, now if only I could change the batterySquare footage of the floor: 1000Square footage of the south windows: (5*(8*4))*3=480

  9. Passive Solar House By Omar Passive Solar Features1. South facing windows2. Overhang of south side roof3. Clerestory windows4. Sky lights and sola-tubesActive Solar Features1. Ceiling fans 2. Water features 3. Sky lights Square footage of the house 1000ft Square footage of the south side windows 30.72ft This is my house in Google Sketch-up

  10. Ryan My Solar House • Passive Solar Features • South facing windows • Overhang of the south side roof • The long side of the house faces south • Vents on the north side • Active Solar Features • Light bulb • Square footage of the floor: 1000 square feet • Square footage of the south windows: 120 square feet

  11. Trenton Solar Village Write Up Trenton Hoshiko Passive Solar Features1. South facing windows2. Sky lights3. long side of house facing southActive Solar Features1. lightSquare footage of the floor= 900 feet^2 Square footage of the south windows = approximately 93.72 feet^2

  12. Raquell • Passive and Active Solar Design • Passive Solar Features: • South facing windows • Clerestory windows • Sky lights and Sola-Tubes • Long side facing south • Overhang of south side roof • Active Solar Features: • Solar Panels • Square footage of the floor: 1000sq. ft. • Square footage of the south windows: (from smallest to biggest) 2sq. ft, • 9sq. ft, 20sq. ft. Total sq. ft: 188sq. ft

  13. Tess Passive Solar Features1. South facing windows2. Overhang of south side roof3. Clerestory windows Active Solar Features1. Ceiling fans2. Water features Square footage of the floor: 25’x40’= 1,000 sq. ft Square footage of the south windows: (4’x4’) 4= 64 sq. ft 7’ x 6.5’= 45.5 sq. ft 45.5+64= 109.5 sq. ft

  16. Passive Solar Design • Uses natural movement of heat and air to maintain comfortable temperatures • Maximizes the benefits it receives from the sun with standard construction features. • Takes advantage of local breezes and landscape features such as shade trees and windbreaks • Uses a simple system to collect and store solar energy with no switches or controls. • http://www.consumerenergycenter.org/home/construction/solardesign/orientation.html

  17. Five Main Passive Design Principals Orientation towards the sun Overhangs and Shading Insulation Placement of windows to gain heat and minimize heat loss Thermal Mass

  18. Orientation towards the sun • Use Google SketchUp • Create a simple shape • Follow these directions: http://www.builditsolar.com/References/SketchUp/SketchUpEx.htm 43° N, 110° W Pinedale, Coordinates
