  5. But…the allies have something else up their sleeve…

  6. Manhattan Project: “The best kept secret of War” • 600,000 worked on it • July ’45 they tested it in New Mexico • Flash visible from 180 miles away • Broke windows 125 mi away. • More powerful than they thought

  7. To bomb or not to bomb? Here’s what Truman had to decide…Do we, • Not drop the bomb…Invade Japan and lose an estimated 2 million allied troops & waste millions developing this bomb 2. Drop other (non atomic) bombs on cities in Japan & blockade so they starve 3. Drop the A bomb in the ocean to scare Japan into surrender (and the SU?) 4. Drop the Atomic Bomb on civilian populations to make Japan surrender & save US/Allied lives

  8. Many Protested its use… Including the scientists who made it! BUT… Truman ordered it to be used • Gave Japan one last chance… • “prompt & utter destruction” • Japan refused to surrender

  9. AUGUST 6th , 1945 The Enola Gay B-29 bomber released “Little Boy” over Hiroshima • An Important Japanese military center • 43 seconds later, every building collapsed in dust • 140,000 died • Japan still refused to surrender

  10. AUGUST 9th 1945…3 days later… The “Fat Man” was dropped on Nagasaki
