Borehole Strainmeter Installation in Japan As told to E. Roeloffs by Dr. Y. Kitagawa and Dr. N. Matsumoto, Geological Survey of Japan
General procedure • Immediately after drilling hole, open-hole installation interval is filled with grout • Grout is allowed to cure, then the hole is reamed and the core retained for inspection • Hole is packed off and fluid pressure is monitored overnight. Pressure change must be less than a certain value for installation to proceed • If grout core is unsatisfactory or pressure change is too great, interval is re-filled with grout and the procedure is repeated • Final installation is done with a thin grout for an extended working time of 24 hours
