  1. Introduction  Everyone wants to safeguard their precious Artworks.  Which is the best way of doing that ? -- Ofcourse a Picture Frame.  A picture can be of your friends, family, travel or even your accomplishments.  Hanging these up on the wall will ensure that your memories never fade away.  Maintaining these frames is also as important as creating them.

  2. Framing  It is the most important factor in caring for art work and is well worth the investment.  Every picture frame enchants a story from within.  Art conservation denotes the maintenance and preservation of artworks, and their damage from deterioration.  Framing can be done for works on canvas and for works on glass.

  3. Works on Canvas  They must always be framed without glass and the canvas must be stretched properly on the supporting frame.  This will help minimize fluctuation of canvas, as a result of humidity and temperature.  These factors cause shrinking and expansion of the paint layer, which results in cracks in the paint.

  4. Works on Paper  Paper work must always be framed under glass to protect the paper.  The mount and back should always be acid-free.  Valuable works on paper should be framed with polycarbonate – a sheet with UV filters instead of glass.  This prevents fading of your artwork.

  5. Hanging  When hanging paintings one must keep in mind two major enemies : direct sunlight and humidity.  Follow these housekeeping guidelines : - Paintings must not be cleaned with water. - Paintings on canvas may be lightly brushed with a feather duster to remove dust. - Frames should be examined regularly for wood-worm.

  6. Storage  Unhanged artwork must be stored in appropriate conditions.  Follow these guidelines for storing your art. - Stored paintings should be raised off the floor to allow air-flow. - Stored paintings should be covered with cotton sheets and not polythene that may cause mould. - Carton or ply dividers should be inserted between the paintings to avoid pressure. - Choose interior walls rather than exterior walls for stacking your stored paintings. They are drier.

  7. Protecting Art  Store 3D works on padded metal shelving, placing the heaviest work on lower shelves.  Never store your artwork near windows, doors and vents.  If you have to stack your artworks, use cardboard barriers that are larger than the artworks. Stack them fron to front and back to back.  Use pallets to elevate your art and protect against flooding.
