H History of Frames • Frames has been a way to represent artwork since years. • Framing were prolificially used for religious icons. • The first picture frame has been traced to the ancient Egyptians. • The earliest known frame originated in 2nd century AD, where a Fayum mummy potrait was discovered in an Egyptian tomb, surrounded by a decorative wooden frame. • The early frames were made up of single piece of wood, carved into a raised border and backing. • At the start of 14th – 15th centuries, most frames were commissioned by church as alter pieces. www.paintboxnolita.com

Construction of Frames • Traditionally frames were made of wood, which is still in practice. • Other materials like silver, bronze, aluminium and plastics such as polystrene are also used. • A picture frame can be of any color or texture but the gliding that is used is common among all. • Frame may contain a pane of picture framing glass or an acrylic glass such as plexiglass to protect the picture. • For pieces to be framed under glass, the glass is raised off the surface of the paper by process of “matting” or stacking two mouldings with the glass in between. www.paintboxnolita.com

Types of Frames There are mainly two types of frames: 1) Handfinished Frames : Frames are tailor made to each individual artwork using timbers like : Ash, Steamed-Beech, Maple, Oak and American Black Walnut. 2) Plexiglass : Plexiglass provides a beautiful alternative for glazing and is an ideal substrate for various applications. www.paintboxnolita.com

Plexiglass Frames • Plexi or acryclic is used for framing artwork or presenting art objects in a display box. • Acrylic glass, a generic term for poly(methylmethacrylate)(PMMA) hard clear plastic, commonly known by the brand names Plexiglas, Lucite, or Perspex. • Plexiglass is lighter than glass and less dangerous to handle. • It comes with a protective plastic or paper mask over it. www.paintboxnolita.com

Acrylic Picture frames is cut using table saw. • Compared to glass , plexiglass is lighter in weight and so it is preferred in framing large sizes. • It is 1/8” thick and relatively expensive as compared to glass. • Acrylic or plexiglass is a petroleum based product so it is susceptible to oil price spikes. • When it comes to cutting glass beats plexi or acrylic, but when it comes to durability, cleanliness and light weight acrylic wins every time. • Plexiglass looks exactly the same as glass and comes in all of glasses variations, regular, non-glare, UV protective, and Museum. www.paintboxnolita.com
