  3. COURSE DESCRIPTION • This course is to introduce student nurses to the basic concepts and techniques in nursing. Students will acquire knowledge and skills to carry out basic nursing procedures through the use of the nursing process and infection prevention practices. It will offer students opportunity to demonstrate skills acquired and to properly document all nursing care given to patients

COURSE OBJECTIVES By the end of the course, the student will be able to: • Perform basic nursing procedures • Demonstrate principles of asepsis • Apply principles of homeostasis in the care of the individual; sick or well • Apply basic principles underlying health and disease to give nursing care using the nursing process • Explain terms used in drug administration • Calculate dosages of drugs and correctly dilute lotions

  5. COURSE OBJECTIVES • Develop skills for safe administration of drugs • Develop skills to meet supportive needs of the dying • Provide appropriate support care during the grieving process for patients and their relatives

COURSE CONTENT UNIT 1:definition and scope of nursing • Definition and meaning of nursing • Areas of practice: the hospital • Cleanliness of the ward and its annexes including management of medical waste. UNIT 2 • The concept of homeostasis in health and illness • Body mechanics • Bed making and Bed accessories • Positions used in nursing of patients

  7. COURSE CONTENT UNIT 3 • Principles of nursing • Maslow’s hierarchy of needs • The nursing process UNIT 4 • Admission and discharge of patients • Trans-in and trans-out of patients • Observation and recording: 1 vital signs

COURSE CONTENT UNIT 4 CONT’D • Meeting the personal hygiene needs of the patient: bathing and grooming, mouth care, care of hands and feet, serving of bedpan and urinal, hair care, treatment of pressure areas , last offices, etc. • Grieve and grieving process. • Observation and recording II :input and output, collection and observation of specimen, urine testing • Meeting the nutritional needs of the patient UNIT 5 • Preparation and dressing of wounds • Abbreviations used in drug administration • Administration of drugs

  9. COURSE DELIVERY The topics will be covered through: • Lectures • Individual presentations • Group work • Group presentations • Demonstration of procedure(s) assigned
