  1. 4/27 Todayyou need the following items: paperand a writing utensil. PAP- have your source/ note cards out on your desk. Mother’s Day is soon- May 13. Think of a woman, whether it be your mom, aunt, grandmother, a teacher, etc., who has provided inspiration or guidance to you and deserves to be honored. 1. On notebook paper, write down that person’s name. 2. Now brainstorm about letters- every word you can think of in relation to letters (parts of a letter, movies about letters, etc.)

  2. Letter Format • Heading • ________________ • ________________ • ________________ • Salutation • _______________________, • Intro_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ • Body - often more than one paragraph__________________________ • __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ • Conclusion__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ • Closing______________, • Signature_____________

  3. Friendly Letter Format • Heading: Includes the address, line by line, with the last line being the date. Skip a line after the heading. • first line - street number and street name • second line - town or city, state, and ZIP code • third line - the date • Greeting or salutation: Dear So-and-so, (remember your comma!) (In a business letter, a colon is used as well as a formal address.) • Introduction: Tells why you're writing. Start out talking about the person to whom you're sending the letter (it's polite).

  4. Body: Main part of the letter. Gets to the point of why you're writing. Change paragraphs and indent each time you change the topic. • Conclusion: Wrap it all up. Be clever. • Closing: Choose an appropriate closing. Should line up with the heading. Only the first word is capitalized. Skip one to three spaces for the signature line. • Signature: In cursive and in ink.

  5. P.S. • What does P.S. stand for? • Postscript- If your letter contains a postscript, begin it with P.S. Skip a line after the signature line to begin the postscript.

  6. Revisiting Thesis • Gives direction to your writing • Expresses the main idea of your paper • States an opinion • Found in first paragraph of writing • You will need a thesis with two points for your letter written in parallel form. (Resulting in two body paragraphs) • Example: Even though I may not say it often enough, Mom, I treasure you because youhave sacrificed exponentially for me, and you have always held high expectations for me.
