Description • The UNESCO ( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) was founded on November 16, 1945. • What UNESCO does is offer opinions that are on issues of culture, science and things of educational importance. Which also elevates the international cooperation of its Member States that are in fields of education, science, culture and communication. • What UNESCO is working on doing is to create the situation where genuine dialogue takes place. • UNESCO’s main mission is to make peace, eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, science, culture, communication and information. • The UNESCOS meets every two years. They meet to discuss the policies and main lines of work of their organization. • Main objectives of UNESCO • Keeping good education and lifelong learning for everyone. • The assembling of science, knowledge and policies for sustainable development. • Talking about social and ethical challenges that are coming up. • Keeping cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and culture of peace. • Making knowledge societies through information and communication.
Linguistic diversity and Multilingualism • There are between 7,00 and 8,000 languages spoken in the world today • There are a few countries that only speak on language but most countries have linguistic diversity. • In countries where more then one language is spoken it is very common for people to be bilingual or even multilingual. • More than 70 percent of the world’s languages are found in only 20 countries. • Most countries have more then one language spoken there. • In some urban schools students are able to speak up to 30 or 40 languages. This has become more popular due to the increase of global interconnectedness.
Immigration and Integration • There are migrations of people all around the world • It happens from rural areas to cities • Less developed places to more developed places • From an area filled with war to more peaceful areas. • Because there are so many different languages spoken around the world many of these people move to places where their first language is not spoken. • After they have moved to a native place they tend to go to communities where they can speak their first language. • But this can cause problems because they are not used to speaking the language of the country and it may be hard to find jobs. • Language is a very important factor in integrating immigrant populations. • It is good when students learn other languages because it gives them the sense of different cultures and also helps them communicate with other people who speak that language. • A lot of countries have support systems for immigrants when they first arrive. • Immigrants are usually very good at other subjects such as math or science but they often have to repeat a year because they are not good in English.
Linguistic rights • Language is a very important and can be a very personal part of someone's identity. • Because they world is full of so many different languages it is important that languages are respected. • The most popular language cant be the only language to be respected • Language rights can commonly be done by the status of the language, use of the language in schools and also having government information and media available in the language.
Recommendations for Creating a Resolution • Every member who participates in UNESCO general conference has an educational system. • A resolution should include • How to include first languages into the main instructions and maintain the language in educational systems in all levels. • Classroom resources should include reading materials. • There needs to be a strategy for teaching mother tongue languages. • Ways to teach and or develop bilingual and multilingual people. • Technology to making teaching easier and for international exchange • Promote languages so that there won’t be discrimination against some languages.
