HYDROELECTRICITY • It is electricity obtained by harnessing the power of water flowing down from a high level • Huge generators convert the potential energy of falling or fast moving water into electrical energy • It is timeless and renewable
-At the top, water is gathered there • -The water is blocked by Sluice gates • These gates are automatic, they open or close by control • The bigger the height difference between the upstream water leel, the greater the amount of electricity generated.
- Once the gates are open , water flows out through a wide tunnel, also known as the penstock
Water then flows down • The kinetic energy of the water is used to turn the turbine which is connected to the generator • The water then flows to the downstream outlet
The turbine's rotation spins • electromagnets which generate current in stationary coils of wire in the generator
-The current is put through a transformer where the voltage is increased for long distance transmission over power lines
ENERGY TRANSFORMATION GRAVATATIONAL POTENTIAL ENERGY KINETIC ENERGY ELECTRICAL ENERGY
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES DESTROYS HABITATS FEW AREAS SUITABLE UNSIGHTLY EXPENSIVE TO BUILT LARGE AREA REQUIRED • RENEWABLE • NO ACID RAIN • NO GLOBAL WARMING • CHEAP TO RUN ONCE BUILT • SOME SYSTEMS PUMP WATER BACK UP AT NIGHT ITHE THE SURPLUS ELECTRICITY – ENERGY EFFICIENT.
