  1. OR & Strategy – PhD topics • Who: • Frances O’Brien • George Wright • Martin Kunc • Robert Dyson (semi-retired)

  2. OR & Strategy – PhD topics • Supporting the strategy process through the use of tools • Exploring current practice through surveys / interviews with practitioners, particularly focusing on the detail of how tools (SWOT, scenarios etc) are used in practice • Case studies exploring the use of video to capture the practice of tool use • Developments to the scenario planning process • Methodological development considering combining scenarios with system dynamics to support scenario generation • Strategy process diagnostic tool • Consideration of what makes an effective strategy process within organisations • May involve empirical exploration of strategy processes in practice • May involve the design and testing of a tool that could be used to support the development and improvement of the strategy process • Prospective PhD candidates should prepare a short research proposal in the areas of scenario thinking or behavioural decision making

  3. OR & Strategy – PhD topics • Behavioural analyses of managerial decision making under the resource-based view of the firm: • The resource-based view of the firm is one of the largest stream of research in the strategy field. Continuing with this line of research, we are looking for PhD students interested in performing research on decision making processes using simulation, experimental research, statistical analysis of longitudinal data sets or case study research methods. • System Dynamics modelling • System dynamics modelling has been developed in 50s at the MIT and involves the development of simulation models based on stocks and flows embedded in rich feedback systems. Currently, it is being employed in: • healthcare, • energy, • commodity markets, • diffusion of innovations, • supply chain dynamics.
