Mt. Diablo Unified School District Measure C 10GB backbone and wireless rollout
Milestones • Selection • Selection Analysis • Acquisition • RFQ Analysis • Security Considerations • Deployment • Testing and adjusting
Selection Considerations • Sustainability – Lifetime Warranty • Support – Training • Manufacturer – Financial Health • 10 GB Backbone • Dual Channel Wireless Radios • Total Cost of Ownership
Selection Analysis • Based on the above Criteria and the RFQ analysis HP Procurve switches and Wireless Radios were selected. • HP 2900 and 5400 switches were chosen to obtain a 10 GB backbone. • HP MSM460 Dual band radios and MSM 765 wireless controllers were also chosen for cost and ease of support.
Acquisition • Surveyed secondary sites to obtain port counts, and room counts. • Compiled port counts and room counts to determine number of switches and wireless access points to order. • Created a spreadsheet containing number part numbers and quantities.
Acquisition • Solicit quotes from major resellers • Choose the least costly of three different quotes that could accommodate with a piggyback-able contract. • Awarded order to lowest responsible bidder at 50 percent below list pricing.
RFQ Analysis • CDW-G $2,987,391.13 • DecotechSystems $2,577,503.86 • TigerDirect.com $2,694,152.72
Security Considerations • Design: VLAN and Access Structure. • Radius and Active Directory (AD). • Guest Network without tokens (simple password). • Student and Employee access with AD. • Scalable Security model to accommodate bring your own device (BYOD). • Network Access Controller (NAC)
Security Considerations • NAC- to control and verify guest and foreign devices. • Virus protection up to date. • Malware and harmful apps and programs. • Manage high bandwidth devices
Installation Notes • The equipment being replaced was a mix of very old (in some cases more than a decade) technology. The techs visited about 200 IDFs, and installed enough switches and copper modules to connect 14,440 devices. • Much of the installation was performed after hours to reduce downtime at a cost of less than $25,000.
Deployment • Since November, TIS Team has worked nearly every weekend deploying switches and WAPs at fourteen secondary and one elementary site. • (Pictures) Let Team Talk
