2009 Specification • 2008 and past years: • 2009
Definitions • A current physical activity event, trend or issue may include such things as: adventure tourism, the latest fitness craze, Māori and Pacific Island Festival, sports clothing, Olympics, adrenaline sports, child obesity, extreme sports, use of national parks, Halberg Awards, developments in teaching games and sport, new research or information impacting on physical performance, Push Play, Green Prescription and other national initiatives etc.
Session 1: Critical Thinking • Between a few of you choose a picture that is available • Using your chosen picture select either the ‘Questions for critical thinking’ or ‘Critical thinking model’ and discuss the questions within your group

Session 3: Examination of 2007 question • Get into groups of 4, each person needs a copy of an example answer (Fitness Crazes 2007) • You need to take on an expert role for your group1. Critical thinking 2. Marking codes3. Key content covered 4. Structure of essay • You will then reconvene and share your findings within the group.
Session 4: 2008 Question • Read through the 2008 question • In your groups use your critical questioning sheets and the A3 sheet provided to brainstorm possible ideas for an essay.

Scholarship 2008 Report: Question Two In Question Two, the best candidates demonstrated: • ability to integrate and synthesise knowledge when critically evaluating • depth and breadth of subject knowledge around an issue, trend or event • ability to format relevant arguments and to justify a position on a clear well defined issue, trend or event • ability to sustain critical evaluation throughout the essay regarding the actual impact on New Zealand society.
Those who didn’t do so well.. In Question Two • inability to demonstrate critical evaluation; this was especially evident in the obesity essays • a superficial coverage on the impact on New Zealand society in their essay • evidence of re-writing a large part of the resources rather than responding to the question • a tendency to make assumptions throughout the essay.
