Button Overview • You will see these buttons while doing this activity • The first one goes to the next slide, the second goes to the slide before, and the one with the house goes back to the first slide. NEXT SLIDE!
What Are We Going to Do? • Our Nervous System controls everything you do, even what you are doing right now! • You will use your brain to learn about your brain and the parts that make it! • After reading the slides there will be a few questions to test what you’ve learned! • GOODLUCK!! BEGIN!
Main Menu • Click on the topic you would like to study, then click the QUIZ button when you’re ready to test yourself. Nerves and Spinal Cord! Parts of the Brain! What else does it do? QUIZ!
The Brain • Your brain is the “boss” of your body • The brain weighs about 3 pounds • Parts of the brain we are going to learn about: • Cerebrum --Hypothalamus • Brain Stem --Pituitary Gland • Cerebellum Back to Main Menu
The Cerebrum • It is the biggest part of the brain • It makes up 85% of the brain’s weight • The cerebrum is the “thinking” part of the brain • Controls the voluntary muscles(muscles that move when you want them to
The Cerebrum (cont’d) • Memory lives in cerebrum • Both long- and short-term • Made up of two halves • Left and Right • Left side controls right side of body • Right side controls left side of body
Activity Time! • Lift up your finger and wiggle it around.. • Do you know what that is? It is using your VOLUNTARY MUSCLES!
Cerebellum • Located at the back of the brain • Found below the cerebrum • 1/8 size of the cerebrum • Controls balance, movement, and coordination
Brain Stem • Located beneath the cerebrum and in front of the cerebellum • Connects the rest of the brain to the spinal cord (runs down neck and back) • Is in charge of all functions the body needs to stay alive (breathing, digesting, circulating)
Brain Stem (cont’d) • Controls involuntary muscles(muscles that you cannot control yourself) in heart and stomach • The brain stem sorts through all the messages sent to and from the brain and the rest of the body
Pop Quiz Question • CAN YOU THINK OF SOMETHING YOU ARE DOING RIGHT NOW THAT IS USING YOUR INVOLUNTARY MUSCLES?
BREATHING!!! • It would be pretty hard to breathe if we had to think about it! • YAY! For involuntary muscles!
Pituitary Gland • VERY small part of the brain • about the size of a pea!! • Produces & releases hormones into the body • Controls amount of sugar & water in the body • Keeps metabolism going strong!
Hypothalamus (long word, huh?) • Controls the body’s temperature • Too hot? It will make you sweat! • Too cold? It will make you shiver! • The hypothalamus does this because it is trying to get the body back to the normal temperature (98.6 degrees F.) Back to Main Menu!
What Else is in the Nervous System? • Nerves • Spinal Cord • These two parts let messages flow back and forth between the brain and the rest of the body • “Emotions”
Nerves and Neurons • Nerves are made up of millions of neurons (microscopic cells) • Each neuron has tiny branches that connect them to other neurons • All neurons eventually connect to make doing things easier and easier each time you do it!
Spinal Cord • A long bundle of nerves inside your spinal column • Spinal column are the vertebrae that protect the spinal cord Back to Main Menu!
What does my nervous system do? • It controls • Tasting • Smelling • Seeing • Hearing • Thinking • Dreaming
Emotions • Emotions are feelings such as happy, sad, mad, etc. • The brain controls the emotions • The brain has cells called amygdala • Scientists believe amygdala is responsible for emotions
Be Good to Your Brain • Eat Healthy Foods! • Get Exercise! • Don’t Do Drugs! • Wear Helmet When Riding Bikes! • Use Your Brain at School! Back to Main Menu!
It’s Quiz Time!! • I know you’ve been paying attention, so I know you’ll do GREAT! • Goodluck!! Begin Quiz!
This system controls everything you do. Which is it? • Nervous System • Olfactory System • Respiratory System • Endocrine System A B C D
Correct! The Nervous System is the system we’ve been learning about, and it controls EVERYTHING we do! Next Question!
Oops! Try Again! Do you remember the name of the body system we learned today? Try again! I bet you’ll get it this time! Try Again!
The Nervous System is made up of these three parts: • Nerves, arteries, veins • Brain, heart, spinal cord • Brain, spinal cord, nerves • Nerves, liver, heart A B C D
Correct! As you know from looking over the slides, the brain, spinal cord, and nerves are what makes up the nervous system! Next Question!
Oops! Try Again! There were three main parts of the nervous system we’ve talked about, can you remember? I’ll give you a hint! The BRAIN is the “boss” of the nervous system Try Again!
Without the nervous system, you couldn’t do which of the following tasks? • Walking • Talking • Breathing • All of the above A B C D
Correct! The nervous system controls EVERYTHING our body does! Next Question!
Oops! Try Again! Try to remember what the nervous system controls! It’s a pretty important system! We need it EVERYDAY!! Try Again!
Which part of the Nervous System is the “boss” or in control? • Spinal Cord • Stomach • Brain • Heart A B C D
Correct! The BRAIN controls everything within the nervous system! Next Question!
Oops! Try Again! That’s a good try, but there is a part of your body that has even MORE control! We’ve learned a lot about it today! Do you know now? Try again!! Try Again!
A typical brain weighs how much? • 3 ounces • 3 tons • 3 pounds • 3 kilograms A B C D
Correct! Great Job! Our brains weigh approximately 3 pounds!
Oops! Try Again! Our brains are pretty big, but not compared to the rest of our bodies! Try Again!
