  1. Scalp Micropigmentation vs. Follicular Regener-8 vs. Hair Transplant Surgery Scalp micropigmentation, Follicular Reger-8 (FR-8) and hair transplant surgery are the three most common treatment options among men and women who have thinning hair. Each one is uniquely different from the next and comes with its own unique set of benefits and drawbacks. Here, you can learn more about each one so that you can make the best possible decision for your own needs. Scalp Micropigmentation Scalp micropigmentation is a process that, much like a tattoo, provides aesthetic results with the use of semi-permanent ink injected just under the skin of the scalp. Pros: Scalp micropigmentation is cost effective when compared to other treatment options, and it’s also more natural-looking for men and women who have experienced significant hair loss. The treatment can last as long as five years, and it works just as well for people who have thinning hair as for those who opt to shave their heads to disguise balding. Cons: Scalp micropigmentation is just that – pigmentation. It is not real hair, and up close, there is a noticeable difference. It is not a permanent solution, and most people will need to start getting touchups in about five years’ time. Scalp micropigmentation is the ideal choice for men and women who want to disguise the appearance of a widening part line or provide a more uniform appearance of stubble or shadow when they shave their heads. Follicular Regener-8 (FR-8) Follicular Regener-8, more commonly known as FR-8, is a process that can help some people regrow their own natural hair. It involves the injection of platelets into the skin on the scalp, which will in turn stimulate the follicles there to produce hair. Pros: The procedure is quick and easy to complete, making it easy to fit into your schedule. Some research suggests that FR-8 may even help improve the way other treatments, including minoxidil, work. The results last a long time, and the risk of rejection or infection is very low. Cons: When compared to scalp micropigmentation, this procedure is quite expensive and requires frequent “booster” treatments. Though the success rate is outstanding, about 20% of people who receive this treatment will not see any results at all. Hair Transplant Surgery Hair transplant surgery involves surgically removing (or “harvesting”) hair follicles from one area of the scalp or body and then implanting them into problem areas, where they will hopefully take root and continue to grow hair over time. Pros: When successful, it provides long-term results for men and women alike who experience baldness. It can restore natural hair growth quickly in most patients, and the results look very natural when compared to scalp micropigmentation or hairpieces. Finally, some patients prefer having a new head of hair in just a single treatment. Cons: Patients go from bald to a full head of hair overnight, which can raise questions from friends and family. This surgery is extremely expensive when compared to other options, as well. Hair follicles can become infected and render the entire surgery unsuccessful, and “shock loss” is another common occurrence. Itching, discomfort, and pain are common after hair transplants, too.

  2. As you can see, there are several different options when it comes to fighting the aesthetic affects of balding, whether you prefer something as simple as scalp micropigmentation or as complex as hair transplant surgery. It’s important to weigh all the pros and cons, then schedule a consultation with a surgeon to discuss the best options based on your health and lifestyle.
