  3. wakeful • Restless, not able to sleep. • not sleeping • awake After the nightmare, I had a wakeful night. I just couldn’t get back to sleep.

  4. gripped • Held tightly. We gripped the rope tightly playing tug-o-war.

  5. swooped • Rushed down suddenly. • Dove quickly The owl swooped down to catch him.

  6. ridge • The edge of something (like a mountain). Little tan chameleon crawled up on a ridge of golden rock.

  7. granary • A place people store grains and seeds Little chameleon slept beneath the granary all winter.

  8. adobe • Walls made of mud, rock and hay The adobe walls kept little chameleon warm all winter long.

  9. Apache • Native American tribe The Apache boy saw the tan chameleon and tried to catch him.
