Engaging 5-E -Think of a time you have been very bored in class. Was there anything special about that class? Can you even remember a specific day in that class? Did you learn anything?
How do we “Engage”? • At the beginning of the lesson SHOW something interesting. • Connect past learning to the current lesson. • Come up with some activities that grab students attention (class discussion, group work, etc…)
What is “Explore”? • This phase lets students experience and research so they learn the concepts and skills.

What is “Explain” • Students put what they have learned into their own words. (internalization) • Students learn vocabulary associated with lesson.
How do we “Explain”? • Worksheets that target vocabulary • Projects • Posters • Reports • Presentations • Digital storytelling
What is “Elaborate” • Allows students to practice their new skills through new experiences. • Let’s students develop a deeper and broader understanding of concepts.
How do we “Elaborate”? • Ask follow up questions • Broaden the scope • Show more applications • Practice target skills
What is “Evaluate” • Allows both the teacher and the student to assess understanding and learning • Should encompass key concepts.
How do we “Evaluate”? • There are many ways to evaluate learning. • Tests, quizzes, and exams • Poster, papers, and presentations • Games are useful for informal evaluations
