Financial Aid Information Emily Bliss, DirectorScholarships & Financial Aid
Topics • Satisfactory Academic Progress • Unofficial withdraws • Financial aid comes after academic decisions • Academic Freedom • Funding levels of aid • Questions from students
Unofficial Withdraws • The dreaded e-mail from our office • We are required to adjust aid back to the date of last academic activity for students who disappear at some point during the semester and earn F’s. • We have 45 days to make the determination. • If we do not receive a response from the e-mail, we have to assume the student never attended. • Once we make that assumption and adjust aid, it is not always reversible if student later proves they attended class.
Aid versus Academics • We try to have students address their academic issues before they come to us with financial aid questions. • Students do not always do this and they are not always truthful with us. • When in doubt, we call the department.
Academic Freedom Over 70,000 regulations to administer financial aid
Financial Aid Figures 2008-2009 academic year Over $81 million aid processed
Gift Aid, continued Work Programs – $919,000; Other external grants - $904,000
Loans $52,173,054 The average loan indebtedness at graduation is $16,115.
Assistance • If you are talking with a student and need help, please call us. • If you identify yourself as faculty, we will make sure you are connected with a counselor right away.
