Practice Support-What works?Digital Primary Care Congress Pauline Foreman September 2019
Planning to cover • Current pressures facing primary care • RCGP role in supporting primary care • Primary care network support & digital challenges
Primary care under pressure • Increased workload & reduced resources • Increased regulatory burden • Decline in the GP workforce
The RCGP • Professional membership body for GPs in the UK • Our purpose is to encourage, foster and maintain the highest possible standards in general practice
RCGP Practice Support • Began in 2014 with the National Peer Support Programme for practices placed in special measures • Support delivered by a multidisciplinary team of approx. 70 highly skilled advisers/trainers including GPs, nurses, practice managers & pharmacists • Diagnostic and targeted support
Our outcomes • 138 practices supported • 87% of re-inspected practices improved their CQC rating, 80% exited special measures • Significantly fewer practice closures compared to non-RCGP supported practices • An average expenditure of £4,854.47 per re-inspected practice
Our Learning • The commonest root causes for a practice entering special measures were: inadequate clinical leadership, inadequate practice management and professional isolation • Practice insight and engagement with the root cause of their difficulties were key to a successful RCGP outcome

Example 3 A group of practice managers in a CCG struggling to work collaboratively • Group mentoring & support to enable them to move forward, develop their specification for extended access and their own support network.
Example 4 An established at scale organisation who were struggling with leadership & engagement issues • A review of current board structure & governance • Stakeholder engagement
Example 5 New pilot CQC at scale inspections • Supporting at scale organisations to prepare/deal with an adverse rating
