In Spanish there are 2 past tense forms. El pretérito is used to describe actions that began and ended at a specific time in the past. BUT……… • There is also el imperfecto. El imperfecto has totally different uses than el pretérito. AND….. • It is easier to form. There are only 3 irregular verbs in el imperfecto.
First….the uses El imperfecto is used for: • habitual or repeated past action over an extended period of time • no exact beginning or ending times • to set the stage for an event that already occurred in the past • for description in the past • to describe feelings and mental actions • to tell time in the past • to describe weather in the past • to equate with the idea of “used to…”

Did you notice that the conjugations of –er and –ir verbs are identical? • There are ONLY three verbs which are irregular in el imperfecto!!!!!!

Oh yes, one more thing….. Remember hay, that verb that did not need to be conjugated? (there is or there are) Well, the imperfect form is había. This means there was or there were (or there used to be).
