«Out, Out ...»By Robert Frost Kemal Vatansever 216 9-D
About the Poet Robert Lee Frost was born in San Francisco, California on March 26, 1874. He was an American poet. He is highly regarded for his realistic depictions of rural life and his command of American colloquial speech.
His works employed settings from rural life in New England in the early twentieth century. He was using complex social and philosophical themes in his poems. Frost was honoredduring his lifetime, receiving four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry.
His first poem was published in his high school's magazine. He has tried many jobs such as helping his mother teach her class of unruly boys, delivering newspapers, and working in a factory as a light bulb filament changer. He has worked in farms that one of them is from his grandfather. Also, World War I has very important plaece on his opinions.
Aim and Literary Devices in Poem "Out, Out ..."is published in 1916. It tells the story of a young boy who dies after his hand is severed by a "buzz-saw". The poem focuses on people's reactions to death and life. The poem was based on a true event thatoccurred in April 1915.Frost's friend’s sonlost his hand to a buzz saw and bled, sothat he went into shock, dying in spite of his doctor's efforts. Frost uses personification in his poem. For example the buzz sawis described as a living thing who can snarle, rattle, andleap out of the boys hands.
Frost concentrates on the innocence and passivity of the boy whois like a responsible adult. The last line is about the soldiers whocontinue killing despite the dead bodies surrounding them. The title of the poem is an allusion to William Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth ("Out, out, brief candle ...").It refers to how unpredictable life is. In this poem, some figurative language including onomatopoeia, alliteration, imagery, and many othersis used.
Comments I think the most important and striking lines in the poem is in last line. «Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs.» It refers to many thing such as life, injusctice, and the cruel facts.
