One Way or Another The Three Chipmunks are Simplifying Again!
Alvin, Simon & Theodore were three chipmunks who loved mischief. Each day after school, they liked to race through the forest and see who would reach the other end first.
“Ready, set, RUN!” ordered Alvin, who was determined to win the race.
“Not so fast!” answered Simon, who calculated that it would take him 23.49 seconds to reach the other end.
“OUCH!” cried Theodore, followed by a huge, loud, GINORMOUSTHUMP!!
Poor Theodore lay beneath a big blue cloud of smoke, with a shiny golden lamp close by.
“Wow, a genie! I thought those were only in the movies!” Cried Theodore.
He was a mischievous genie, who loved to fool people. But little did he know that this little bunch was slightly more mischievous than he...
I will give you one wish and one wish only, but you must answer this tricky question first. You have 10 seconds!
“I know! That’s easy!” cried Simon, who loved to go first in everything.
“B-but, they’re such large numbers. How could that be?” Stammered the baffled genie..
All you have to do is simplify it. 37= 30 + 7 56= 50 + 6 __________ = 80 + 13 Its 93!
The genie frowned at Simon’s answer, the little chipmunk outsmarted him!
Simon asked for three science kits. “As you wish,” the genie grumbled with a flick of his wrist
“B-but, they’re such large numbers. How could that be?” Stammered the baffled genie..
“Easy Peezy! Use compensation!” 37 + 56= 40 + 56 = 96 - 3= 93 Round 37 to 40, but don’t forget to subtract the extra 3 at the end!
The genie frowned at Alvin’s answer, the little chipmunk outsmarted him!
“Well Mr. Genie, it only seems fair that we get a second wish. Three pairs of roller skates, please!” “As you wish,” the genie grumbled with a flick of his wrist.
“I might know one more way,” said a timid Theodore as he stepped forward.
“B-but, they’re such large numbers. HOW could that POSSIBLY be?” cried the genie, who was running out of patience, and wishes, too..
37 + 56 We can divide part of the second number to help make the first number a multiple of 10. 37 + 50 + 3 + 3 37 + 3 = 40 50 + 3 = + 53 --------- = 93! “That’s called bridging! Added Simon”
The genie huffed and grunted, but it wasn’t long before Theodore interrupted to say..
“I’d like three huge chocolate caramel milkshakes with extraextra whip cream and honey drizzled all down the side with sprinkles and cherries and...”
But Theodore ran out of breath, and suddenly there stood 3 giant chocolate caramel milkshakes, all in a row.
“See, old Genie, old pal,” said Alvin. “There’s always more than one way to simplify a problem!”
