Paving the Way Toward a New Generation of In-Space Operations CapabilityThe Orbital Express Program
NEXTSat (Client) Active Mechanism Passive Mechanism ASTRO (Servicer) DARPA Orbital Express Program Will Demonstrate Many Revolutionary Technologies for the 1st Time First fully autonomous capture and servicing of a satellite from 200 km range without client assistance: • On-board GN&C to approach and station keep within 10 cm of client using passive, targetless system • “Soft” capture of a satellite • Transfer of propellant with US technology • Transfer of a component • First embedded IEEE 1394 (Firewire) spacecraft network ASTRO during final integration (4/06) • Capture of free flying vehicle and component transfer using closed-loop servo vision
Phase I RAMP/TDP process used to identify risks, assess exposure, develop mitigation plans and evaluate progress Operational System Risks are mitigated by a successful on-orbit demonstration and continual refinement by OASIS community Key Capabilities for Operational System were Identified for OE Demonstration RAMP TDP
Orbital Express Demonstrate Technical Feasibility Demonstrate • Rendezvous, proximity operations & capture • Propellant and hardware transfer Provide • Customer value at less cost than replacement satellite • Service at virtually no risk to customer by use of insurance and by initially focusing on satellites at near-end-of-life Satellite Servicing of Existing Assets Demonstrate “real-world” life, reliability & cost benefits for operational satellites Encourage • Standardized servicing interfaces • Scheduled maintenance and servicing op’s • Greater flexibility and performance Next Generation Operators demand minimum impact OE-enabled features in next gen satellites Cooperative Servicing Infra-structure Enable • Revolutionary new space missions and capabilities Low Risk Servicing Capability Demonstrations Improves Customer Confidence and Encourages A New Paradigm
Orbital Express Paves the Way to Revolutionary New Capabilities Boeing’s strategy is to start with a low cost, low risk approach and evolve this approach as confidence levels increase toward a new paradigm; to design and operate spacecraft as never previously imagined OE Program Points of Contact Bob Friend - Program Manager 714-896-3018, r.friend@boeing.com Tom Kessler – Mgr, Operational Applications: 714-658-4733, thomas.l.kessler@boeing.com
