TAG Meeting #1: May, 17, 2005 Developing Re-Use Applications and Improving the Economic Benefits of Florida’s Waste Materials Florida Institute of Technology Civil Engineering Department PI: Dr. Paul Cosentino Associate PI: Dr. Howell Heck Graduate Student: Carl Sandin Undergraduate: Lennon Shade
Technical Awareness Group (TAG) Members • Current members: • David Horhota FDOT-SMO • John Shoucair FDOT-SMO • David Westcott CEMEX Corp. • Chris Brunais Goodson Paving, Inc. • Suzanne Boroff FDEP • Jim Langenbach GeoSyntec Consultants
Objectives The objectives of this 12-month project are: • identify environmentally safe waste materials; including recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and concrete rubble • mix with common fill to improve strength and stiffness • evaluate economic impacts and benefits to the state • develop construction specifications
First Quarter Accomplishments • Website prepared • Report posted on website and submitted April 1st to FCSHWM • Site Visit to Goodson Paving to collect concrete samples • Survey prepared for RAP and Concrete Rubble producers
Web Site • The web site is available to view: • http://www.civil.fit.edu/cosentino_project.html • Currently contains: • Project Description • Proposal • Proposal Presentation • 1st Quarterly Report • TAG Presentation • Continuously Update as Work Progresses
Samples Obtained • RAP Samples from APAC Melbourne Plant • Good Material in Nonstructural Areas • Subject to Creep under Constant Stress • Mixes Show Improvement but not eliminated • Concrete Rubble Samples from Goodson Paving Melbourne Plant • Visually a Coarse Granular Material • Several Stockpiles available
Second Quarter Tasks • Critical Tasks: • Sampling Waste Materials • Survey Waste Material Generators • Begin Testing & Mixing Program • Initialize Specifications
1. Sampling Waste Materials • Material sources: • Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) • Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA), concrete rubble • Improvements to Recycled Materials: • Add % of AASHTO A-3 clean sand • Improvements to Marginal Soils by Adding RAP or RCA • Sand-clay base • Muck
2. Survey Waste Generators • To: FDOT District Engineers, then contractors and processing facilities • Objective: To estimate variability of: • Production Type • Quantities • Engineering Behavior • Economics • Survey Link: • http://my.fit.edu/~cosentin/rap_rca_survey.php\ • Discussion and Comments
3. Testing & Mixing Program • Fundamental Geotechnical Testing • Grain Size Distribution • Moisture-Density • LBR • Mixes: • RAP and RCA with A-3 sand • RAP and RCA with fill soil or sand-clay base
4. Initialize Specifications • States using RAP and/or concrete rubble: • Texas • Virginia • Michigan • Minnesota • California
Next TAG Meeting • Tuesday July 12th ? • Time, 2pm?
