  1. The Circulatory System

  2. Circulatory System • The organ system made of the heart, blood vessels and blood • transports substances through the body

  3. BLOOD • A type of connective tissue • Made up of 4 parts: • Red blood cells • White blood cells • Platelets • plasma

  4. Red Blood Cells • Contains a protein hemoglobin which transports oxygen and carbon dioxide

  5. White Blood Cells • Fight infection!

  6. Platelet • Aids in clotting

  7. Plasma • Protein rich liquid in which blood cells float

  8. Blood

  9. The Heart • Organized into 4 chambers • Pacemaker cells tell the heart to contract and pump blood • Valves in the heart make sure the blood always goes the right way

  10. 3 Types of Blood Vessels Arteries: carries blood away from the heart (more muscular than veins) Veins: carries blood back to the heart (contains valves) Capillaries: a tiny blood vessel- link arteries and veins together

  11. Capillaries allow oxygen to diffuse from blood into cells • Carbon dioxide moves from cells into blood and out through lungs • Other waste goes through the kidney then gets excreted through urine

  12. The circulation of blood • the heart pumps blood to lungs – oxygen goes into blood, carbon dioxide leaves • Blood travels through arteries and capillaries and gives oxygen to cells, wastes are carried away • Blood returns to the heart through veins

  13. Coronary Artery Disease • These are the blood vessels that provide oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle tissue • These arteries can become blocked with plaque (deposits of fats, cholesterol, calcium, etc) • Build-up can be due to bad heath (smoking), diet, lack of exercise, genetics • An angiogram (fluorescent dye injected into the blood is X-rayed) can detect this and preventative measures can be taken before the disease turns fatal

  14. Heart Attack • When coronary arteries become completely blocked with either a blood clot or plaque • The heart stops pumping and the tissue begins to die • An electrocardiogram (ECG) measures the electrical signals from the heart as it beats – damaged tissue signals are different than healthy signals
