  6. Are Okonkwo’s final actions: Cowardly Heroic

  7. In your partners • Find two quotes to support your point. • Okonkwo’s final actions are cowardly. He comitted suicide to escape his problems, which is a disgrace to the culture. Obierka, Okonkwo’s friend, was fearfully talking to the District Commissioner and said, “that man was one of the greatest men in Umoufia and you drove him to kill himself and now he must be buried like a dog.” (204)

  8. Using the quotes in context: • For each quote, what background do we need to know in order to have that quote connect to the argument (hero or coward), and to understand the context of the quote. • What is the background? If someone is talking, who is talking? To whom? • Where are they? • What do we need to know to understand the context of this quote? • Don’t use: The quote shows… or In this quote…use the context to introduce the quote.

  9. 3/5 • Through reading, writing and discussion, students will analyze and evaluate their writing of a literary analysis using peer editing. • Underline thesis statements • Check quotes and context • Peer editing • Magic realism background • Magic realism stories

  10. Context of quotes • Look through your partner’s paper, and look at each quote. Look at the sentence before it and see if there is enough context to understand the connection between the thesis and the quote. • Is someone talking, if so, does it say who? To whom are they speaking? • What has happened just before this incident? • Where are they? • If it needs more information, specify what information is missing on your partner’s paper.

  11. Look again at the quotes: • The page number should be written like this after the quote (9). It should not say, “On page 79 it says…” • It should not mention “this quote” anywhere. • NO-This quote shows… • NO-I think this quote means… • The quote should allow the paper to flow smoothly.
