  2. Begin with dialogue Ms. Sandler, come quick!” exclaimed Darren. “The fish is caught in the filter!” “It is?” I asked puzzled. What does he mean? Then I saw it. There was the fish hanging upside down from the filter by its tail. It was one of the cute black, bobble-eyed fish too.

  3. Begin with an image The black fish bobbed lifelessly from the aquarium filter like a wind sock. Sucked up by its tail, the poor fish upside down.

  4. Begin with an action Quickly I walked over the aquarium where Darren and Phillip stood. I looked down at the filter. Yes, I thought to myself sadly. They were right. The fish was dead.

  5. Begin with setting It was in the middle of Writing Workshop when it happened. Purple writing folders were out on the tables as students worked on their personal narratives. Netbook computers were open on some tables as students typed their stories. Colored pens were being used to scribble revision marks on lined pages of paper. Students whispered as they discussed their stories with writing partners. I was walking around meeting with students about their writing pieces.
