Structures Engineering 1 Kamiakin HS
Introduction • We will be building a bridge and a tower for testing • Before we begin building one of these structures we need to know some things about them • What types of bridges are there? • What types of towers are there? • What are some examples of each? • What materials are used in the construction of these structures • What math/science might we use to predict the strength of structures
Presentation/Resources • You will become the resident expert on a given topic related to structures • You will select a topic from the following list, research it, and create a presentation from which you can share what you have discovered (topics follow this slide with a brief description of each) • Where do I find information? • Library • Intertubes • Classroom books • Teacher’s Guide • Other resources approved by your instructor • What Can I Use to Present? • Most students select PowerPoint • Some Like Prezi: a free application and fun • Web Page • Poster Session
Topics • Bridges • Give a historical perspective • Describe what types are currently used? • Give examples of each • Share the geographical location of each • Discuss advantages/disadvantages of each
Topics • Towers • What types are currently used? • Give examples of each • Share geographical location of each • Discuss advantages/disadvantages of each
Topics • Materials • What types are currently used? • Give examples of each • Discuss advantages/disadvantages of each
Topics • Math/Science • Given that we will be building truss based bridges and structures, what math and science principles are used to determine strength of structures • Give examples and demonstrate calculations
Testing • Testing Materials • Given that we will be using balsa wood for our structures, what tests can we conduct to help us build the strongest structures? • Test several types of joints for strength: butt joints on end grain, lap joints, miter joints, gusseted joints • Test single, laminated (top-bottom), and laminated (side-side) • Record your data • Take photos of your tests
Evaluation Be sure to discuss who did what on the project!
Directions • Select a partner or choose to work alone • Select a topic • Inform your instructor on both your decisions • Begin your research • Create a presentation • You have 5 school days to complete this task. • We begin presentations on the 6th day
Resources • Eiffel Tower in Paris, France • Great Mosque in Kairouan, Tunisia • Super Tower in Dubai, United Arab Emirates • Dubai Towers proposed in Dubai, United Arab Emirates • Bamboo Bridge in Wonosobo, Indonesia • Primitive Suspension Bridge in Pakistan
