2. Mrs. Shehab • I graduated from Loyola University with a Bachelor’s in Science in Education and a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction. • I have one wonderful daughter. • I’ve been teaching for 22 years and heading to my 23rd year at Garvy. • I love integrating technology into the classroom!

3. Our Mission • By providing a rigorous core curriculum, we educate all students and foster critical thinking while integrating technology in order to prepare a community of learners for college and career readiness in the 21st century.

5. From 3rd grade to 4th • Students will be looking hard (often anxious)for explanation of facts, how things work, why things happen as they do; good age for scientific exploration • Likes to work with partner of choice-cliques may begin • Fairness issues increase-extreme competition...should be presented with a sense of humor and fun • age of negotiation • second chances important, tendency to give up • Laughing with nines is the best medicine! -Adapted from Chip Wood, Yardsticks

6. Science I follow the Next Generation Science Standards. The topics I will be covering this year are: Quarter 1: Energy Conversions Quarter 2: Vision and Light Quarter 3: Earth’s Features Quarter 4: Waves, Energy, and Information

7. Science Grading Policy Lab work and Classwork (which will include writing in Investigation Notebooks)=45% Assessments and Projects (may take more than a week to complete)=45% Homework (Reflections, Exit Slips, Skills)=10%

8. Social Studies • 1st Quarter : History of Illinois: The Midwest Region • 2nd Quarter: Illinois Today and Northeast Region • 3rd Quarter: U.S. Regional Movement and Culture and the West Region • 4th Quarter: Illinois and the World and The Southwest and The Southeast Region

10. Homework • Students are responsible: • for completing and handing in all assignments on time. • for any work missed due to absences from class and will obtain missed assignments • from classroom log of homework assignments or the teacher (Google Classroom). ● Students will record all assignments in their assignment notebook. ● Students will assume responsibility for bringing home all necessary materials to complete assignments. ● Students are expected to produce quality work reflecting their personal best on all assignments. ● Students are responsible for speaking to the teacher and/or parent if there is a consistent homework completion problem.

11. Classwork • Science and Social Studies are very active classes that require hands on participation and small and whole group discussions. • Written work is expected to be legible and each student is expected to turn in their best quality work. • Handwriting will be strongly encouraged and work should be written with erasable blue/black pens.

12. Tests • Students will be completing their assessments online through Google Classroom, Socrative, or on paper. • In Science, students may be graded informally through labwork and content. • In Social Studies, students may be graded on class notes and geography.

13. Projects • STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) projects may take place as a supplement to what we are working on in class. Students may complete the assignment individually or in partners to complete a task. • All projects should reflect originality of the budding scientist.

14. Grading Guidelines • Check grades in Aspen (Call the office for Parent/PIN passwords). Set triggers to review grades. This way there are NO surprises. Go to Aspen.cps.edu Students are encouraged to check their grades on a regular basis. • Checkmarks on the report card will keep a child off of the honor roll. After 3 missing/late assignments a child will receive a checkmark. We will email you on the third missing assignment for notification. • *Honor Roll A’s= Gold Honor Roll *A’s/B’s= Silver Honor Roll (NO C’s)

15. Late Work Policy • Missing assignments are to be turned in the next day for partial late credit (50%), after that the grade is a zero. Late work is not on time and it is noted. • The number of days you are absent is the number of days for make up time (for instance, you are absent for two days, you are allowed to complete your work in the two days you were absent. If you did not complete it in the time allowed, it will be noted “Msg” and given partial late credit (see first bullet statement)

16. Report Cards • These are issued four times a year. For the first and third marking periods, parents are expected to pick up their report card. Please view the Garvy newsletter or the quarter bulletins for further information.

18. Attendance • School starts at 8:30 a.m. Be on time! • Students are responsible for missed work. • Absence notes are required upon return for an excused absence. • Excused absences are limited to: illness, family emergency,death related, and religious holiday

19. Make Up Work • Each student will choose a classmate to be a homework partner (either from their homeroom or someone who lives close to them. • If they do not have a homework partner, they will be able to access their homework on Google Classroom. • I encourage that parents communicate via email instead of contacting the office phone if their child is sick and want a sibling to collect their work. (Siblings must come closer towards the end of the day,3 pm to avoid lost of class time in their own class.

20. Building Character • P.A.W.S. (Practice Respect,Achieve, Work, Safe and Secure) program • Second Step character lessons: Empathy and Respect, Listening Attentively, Understanding Complex Feelings, Problem Solving, Making a Plan-are some example lessons we will be focusing on this year • Buddies • Morning Meeting • Class Jobs

21. Rules • Be respectful and kind. • Clean up your space. • Listen to directions the first time. • Work hard-do your own work and complete all assignments. • Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

Discipline • PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support) • We practice PBIS guidelines through our P.A.W.S. • Practice Respect • Achieve • Willing to work • Safe and Secure Be Your Best!! Some of our incentives for displaying PAWS behavior include: • Individual students can earn tickets to use for purchasing items from our school store! • Classrooms may earn links and win the Golden Bulldog! • Students who exhibit PAWS behavior all week can attend Fun Friday!

24. As the Parent • I believe that we are both play an integral role in providing guidance for your child • Support each other • Trust that each other has the student’s best interest in mind • Communicate openly • Have patience • Work together • Help with homework

26. Exit Procedures-Door 4 Children are expected to be picked up from school on time. If a child is going to be picked up later than 3:30, a phone call to the school office should be made. Children are able to walk home from school or go to meet a sibling at their door or meeting spot. We will wait about a minute after the bell and if your child does not see anyone, we will direct them to go sit at the round table near the office. Please let us know if your child walks. You will need to enter the main doors to get your child at the round table. Right at School is a childcare option for families who need childcare after 3:30 P.M.

28. TO DO • RETURN FORMS: Emergency, Income, Student Code of Conduct, Internet/Media Consent, etc… We receive funds from the state for income forms returned. If it doesn’t apply to you simply write DNA (Does not apply), & sign and return. • Fees: School fee ($75) You can pay online. Go to epay on the Garvy website. PTA ($10) • Conferences: Email the teacher to schedule an appointment. We generally meet during our prep. Periods. Please allow at least a 24 hour return window. • Volunteers must go to cpsvolunteers.org You must be on this list to volunteer for field trips or other school events.
