  1. Eleanor Roosevelt Essential Question How do I discuss the lives of historical figures who expanded people’s rights and freedoms in a democracy?

  2. Who? • Eleanor was born October 11, 1884. • She grew up in a wealthy family. • When she was 15, she went to school in England • Married a President. WORD Authority- the right to lead and make decisions. TO KNOW

  3. What? • Eleanor Roosevelt supported equal opportunities for African Americans and Women. • She was the first chairperson of the United Nations Human Rights Commission. • She visited relief projects and reported progress back to her husband. • She was an advocate for the rights of the poor and impoverished.

  4. When? • In 1925, Eleanor started Val-Kill shop to give jobs to people in the community. • She became the First Lady in 1933. • She visited U.S. troops in Europe and the South Pacific in 1942 and 1943 • In 1952, Eleanor went to Israel to meet with leaders of different countries.

  5. Where? • 1884: New York, New York -She is born to a wealthy family. • 1925: Hyde Park, New York • Her home is a place for work. • 1933: Washington, DC • She becomes First Lady of the United States. • 1947: New York, New York -She helps write the United Nations Declaration of Human Right.

  6. Why? Roosevelt stood up for her beliefs. She fought for the rights of many. She worked for world peace. She never quit, because she saw there were many things for her to do. She was voted “America’s Most Admired Woman” many times.

  7. Accomplishments • The United Nations, an organization Roosevelt helped to found, continues to work peace, helping people in trouble, and education. • Americans honored her by putting her picture on a postage stamp.

  8. Character Traits Cooperation • Roosevelt obeyed her grandmother when she returned to New York instead of staying in England. • Cooperation means working together with others. • Eleanor Roosevelt cooperated with Franklin Roosevelt and others on many projects. Tolerance • Tolerance means respecting the beliefs and practices of others. • Roosevelt showed tolerance when she worked for an agreement on the Declaration of Human Rights. Respect For and Acceptance of Authority
