Introductions- Me • Currently-- • Chair of the Master of Science in Information Management Program at the University of Washington Information School • Member of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative Board of Trustees since 2001 • In the past-- • Technology manager for the US Libraries Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation • Managed the architecture, design and technology for MSWeb, Microsoft’s internal portal • Developed electronic information delivery systems for Boeing’s intranet, reference librarian for several years • Started and ran a bicycle shop in Friday Harbor for eight years • Engineering geologist for eight years • And you? Course Objectives • Apply the principles of management from a leadership perspective  • Understand strategic management principles • Apply quality management techniques to information systems • Understand the role of information in organizational management • Understand the role of information in decision making • Cultivate a talent for innovation and leadership • Describe techniques for innovation and leadership • Apply strategic planning in information projects • Understand and apply the information perspective • Articulate the ethical issues in information creation and use in organizations • Be able to forge the relationship between people, information, and technology for effective management of organizations LIS580- Spring 2006

  4. Course Assignments • Two individual written assignments • Mini case study analyses based on book • Two group discussions in class • One final group project and individual assignment LIS580- Spring 2006

Group Discussions • Your job is to facilitate an analytical discussion and come to conclusions • Allows class members to explore the day’s material in a meaningful context • Should end in a clear summation and outcomes • Each session will have a case to build on, but participants are encouraged to extend the discussion to include other readings and areas of personal experience LIS580- Spring 2006

Miscellaneous • E-Submit for all papers; deadline is midnight of date indicated, no exceptions • Graded papers will be back to you within one week • Additional resources posted on web site- send any to me that you think should be added • Please ask questions, let me know if something is not clear, give me feedback, and help everyone to get the most out of the course LIS580- Spring 2006

Course Organization • Course organized in four major sections, each with one guest lecture from a practitioner • Correspond to the textbook sections and chapters, and lectures will parallel the readings • Additional readings will add the library perspective, or a deeper look at issues in the area being studied • Each day will begin with an instructor-led (or guest) lecture/discussion, and end with a student-led discussion of a case LIS580- Spring 2006

The Text • Clearly not focused on libraries • Any guesses why? • We’ll bring the library perspective in during discussion and your assignments • Integrates theory, practice and tools • All three essential for practical management • There is also a companion website which may be of value to you LIS580- Spring 2006
