James Monroe’s Presidency 1817-1825 President # 5 8:1 Pgs 260-261 After the War of 1812 • James Monroe becomes President 1817 • US and Britain still had unresolved issues so they made… • The Rush-Bagot Agreement : which gave both the US and Britain access to The Great Lakes for fishing • Convention of 1818set the northern and western boundaries between the US and Canada- North at the 49th N parallel and west at the Rocky Mountains. Also agreed to share Oregon Territory • General Jackson led troops in to Florida to capture Native American raiders. There he captured Spanish military posts and overthrew the Spanish Governor • Adams-Onis Treaty- Spain gave Florida Territory to the US and US gave Texas Territory to Spain • Most Spanish Colonies in North and South America gained their Independence by 1821, including Mexico
Monroe Doctrine • President Monroe was worried about European countries coming to try and take over the new independent Latin America colonies • He wanted to protect the new countries in the Western Hemisphere against possible European invasion (North and South America) • He issued new laws about the US involvement with the newly independent Latin America Colonies in North and South America • The US would not interfere in the affairs of European nations • The US would recognize, and not interfere with, colonies that already existed in North and South America (ex) Mexico • The Western Hemisphere was to be off-limits to future colonization by any foreign country • The US would consider any European country’s attempt to colonize or interfere with any nation in North or South America to be a hostile act.
