  1. JUMPSTART If you wanted to make some money this summer, what could you do? What kind of skills do you have? Would you pick up trash along a highway? Work in someone’s garden? What would you NOT be willing to do? Why?

  2. How many Americans are currently unemployed? 12.7 million of 356 million

  3. How many Americans were unemployed during the Great Depression? 13 million of 123 million

  4. Discussion Questions If you were currently an unemployed adult, what kind of job would you want? Would you be willing to take any job offered? Why or why not?

  5. Roosevelt Offers a New Deal • Most Texans did not support Hoover after the Depression hit. • 1932 – Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) is elected president w/VP John Nance “Cactus Jack” Garner • New Deal Legislation – programs and laws designed to create jobs and improve economy The office is not worth a bucket of warm spit.

  6. Programs Put Texans to Work • Works Progress Administration (WPA) • Public Works Administration (PWA) • River Walk in San Antonio and San Jacinto Monument

  7. Providing Jobs for Youth • LBJ and the National Youth Administration (NYA) employed youths in libraries, offices, schools, and to build playgrounds and parks. • Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) – employed youths for $30/month to fight floods, preserve farmland, build dams and watch towers and state parks

  8. Helping Farmers • Farmers were paid to plant fewer crops to raise prices by lowering the surplus. • Conservation practices were begun to counteract the drought. • Farmers were taught news ways to reduce loose dust and keep the soil in place. • Also planted trees, created ponds, and reservoirs.

  9. “Ma” Ferguson Returns • Elected to a second term in 1932 • Lowered taxes and state spending • Legislature rejected all of her propositions except a tax on oil • Accused of steering federal funds to benefit personal friends and supporters • Fired all 44 Texas Rangers and replaced them w/her own supporters

  10. An Era of Lawlessness • Corrupt law enforcement was a huge problem • Violent criminals like George “Machine Gun” Kelly, Clyde Barrow, and Bonnie Parker roamed • Governor Allred, in his first term, will fight back w/the Department of Public Safety and reorganization of the Texas Rangers.

  11. Texas Celebrates its Centennial • 1936 – 100th Anniversary of Texas • Dallas hosted the World’s fair as well as the Centennial Celebration w/the construction of Fair Park. • Over 6 million visitors • Created the Hall of Negro Life – the 1st celebration of African American culture
