1. Wash those hands! • Prevents bacteria from your hands from getting into any samples. • Lather hands for 20 SECONDS without water • Rinse hands for 20 SECONDS with water • 20 seconds is the “Happy Birthday Song” TWICE
2. Wipe down the lab bench! Using disinfectant wipes (on benches) Clears off any contaminants that may have been on the lab table
3. Be mindful of spills Wipe up with a rag (blue) or sponge as soon as they happen!
4. Clean glassware and materials Detergent powder (Gatorade shakers) Bristle brushes and sponges Follow directions for placement of lab items
5. Disinfect Lab table After you have completed the lab This prevents any contaminants from your lab from lingering
6. Wash you hands! Again! Should be the last thing you do in lab area.
Inoculating Loops And other parts of aseptic technique
Light Bunsen burner Turn on gas Use striker Adjust so that blue cone of flame is showing
Inoculate Loop Start with loop nearly vertical Place in flame until it glows red hot Make sure entire wire glows red
Allow loop to cool If not cooled, may kill the bacteria you’d WANT to transfer
Flame mouth of container For test tubes and glass bottles Sterilizes opening Do NOT put cap on bench!
