Principles of Development • Supports MMU’s institutional plan and employability strategy • Draws on existing good practice (AGCAS, HECSU, AGR, HEA) • Researched and written by careers professionals • Draws on feedback from MMU students • Can be customised in line with needs of MMU course tutors and students • Updated regularly (at least once a year) • Sustainable/deliverable

  5. “Futures” • Self assessment, occupational choice, finding work experience and getting the most out of it • Marketing skills and experience effectively in CVs and applications • Reflective learning and employability, including transferable skills, are cross-cutting themes • Supporting materials and assignments can be tailored to subject disciplines, enabling it to fit seamlessly within appropriate 20 credit units.

  6. Mentormatch • Employability e-mentoring by employers and alumni for students and graduates • Help with occupational knowledge, CVs, applications and interviews • Can result in work experience • Students choose their own mentor

  7. The “Go!” Employability Portal • Explains employability in a student-friendly way • Suggests practical ways to develop employability and signposts opportunities • Sections for each year of study, graduates, HE staff and employers

  8. Self-directed WebCT tutorials • Interactive, self-study resources suitable for level 5 or 6 students and taking 1-2 hours to complete • CVs and covering letters, • Making applications • All about interviews • Can be incorporated into PDP or employability elements of courses

  9. Workshop Packs Designed to be delivered in 1-1.5 hours by any member of staff. Each contains: a PowerPoint presentation; tutor notes and lesson plan; and a comprehensive student handout: Topics- • Applications, CVs and covering letters • Assessment centres and psychometrics • Interviews • Work Experience

Careers & Faculty Engagement: Now • The majority of students access academic tutors for careers information • Not all academic tutors are aware of the expertise and resources in the careers department • We have no strategic/structural fora for academic & careers staff to come together • Careers resources are not easy to find • The careers service is not sufficiently visible to students or staff • It is a challenge to get students to think about employability/careers at an early enough stage

Careers & Faculty Engagement: Future There is an urgent need to : • equip all staff who provide careers support with the training and information they need • provide opportunity for academic and careers staff to work more closely together • increase the visibility of careers and employability at programme and university level • be clear about our respective expectations
