At a holiday resort where wealthy French creoles come and go every summer.
Edna starts to wonder what it would be like without her husband. Her friendship with Adele gives her a sense of freedom and self-discovery.
“She did a shout for joy, as with a sweeping stroke or two she lifted her body to the surface of the water”(Chopin 47).
She grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and was one of the five children her parents had. Her two sisters died as well has her brothers at a young age. Her father later died after she was sent to a catholic boarding school. Then she was sent home and lived with all women, leaving her with a lack of male role models.
Then later she was married to Oscar Chopin and had six kids of their own. Her husband died after their recent move to Cloutierville. She was then accused of having and affair with a married neighbor. She moved back to live with her mother and shortly after that she died. She wrote her stories about French creoles and cajuns that she had earlier lived with and based her characters on real people.
Edna and Robert start to grow closer through time over the summer but when the time comes Robert leaves Edna heartbroken.
While living in the city, she starts to grow apart from her family. She refused to go to her sisters wedding, doesn’t join Leonce in his trip to New York and is seperated from her children.
After a while she meets new people and falls in love with another man. Cheating on her husband but still longing for Robert, she tries to find out if he still cares about her.
“She leaned over and kissed him- a soft, cool, delicate kiss, whose voluptuous sting penetrated his whole being- then she moved away from him. He followed, and took her in his arms, just holding her close to him. She put her hand up to his face and pressed his cheek against her own. The action was full of love and tenderness” (Chopin 177).
While her husband is away on a trip, Edna has an affair with Robert. I drew a connection from the novel and connected it to reality because many women nowadays cheat on their husbands and boyfriends.
