Label Printing At Hampden-Sydney College Library Toni Hamlett Hampden-Sydney College SIUG November 13, 2008
History • We printed labels from OCLC Connexion • If we needed labels from Millennium, we hand typed them into the OCLC Label Program. • Our printer was a Lexmark Dot Matrix Pin fed printer
Our Goals • Print directly from Millennium and Connexion to the same printer • Each cataloger could have his/her own printer • Printing could be done in the stacks by students to replace faded labels
Equipment/Software • Printer: • Zebra TLP 2844 thermal transfer printer • Software is from Rasmussen Software, Inc. • Print Wizard Server Edition • There is support at the website for using software with Millennium • Tablet PC • Wireless Scanner
Software • Print Wizard Server Edition is a product that can enhance and adapt the output from Millennium on its way to the printer. • In order to get PWSE involved in the printing process, it must be inserted into the “printing pipeline” that flows from Millennium to the printer.
Software (cont.) • It was a little tricky but we received good help directly from Bob Rasmussen as needed. • The Print Wizard Server Edition has to be installed on each computer that will be used to print from. • In order to get the print data from Millennium to Print Wizard, Print Wizard needs to use its "listen mode", which is a feature that is in Server Edition only.
Software (cont.) • The general setup involves installing a printer, setting its port to be a local TCP/IP port, running Print Wizard to listen for print jobs on that port and then setting the application up to print to that particular TCP/IP address and port. • This is called “localhost” printing.
Setting Print Options • Printer must be set up in the Print Wizard Program to select font, font style, and font size. There is a file in the Print Wizard Program that is customized to the label stock you use. • In Millennium the Label Printer must be set to access the local printer and some parameters set.
Label Stock • Vernon #7713 • Fan-Fold foil backed labels, SP1/SP2 • We have them rolled onto a ½” core • Either way will work in the printer
Printing from Millennium • Set the Label Printer to the localhost printer your created
Conclusions • We have had no problems since we have installed all hardware/software in August 2007 • We have a student come 2 hours per week to replace labels as needed in the stacks • Catalogers love these printers.
