Screening for cervical cancer in Burundi • Solutions: • Prevention of the infection by vaccination against HPV: in girls between the age 9 – 12, before any sexual activity. • VIA*: a simple cost effective method that detects abnormal areas in the cervix followed by cryotherapy to eradicate the lesion detected. • HPV testing: detects the presence of high risk HPV types (16, 18) but doesn’t necessarily detect a lesion. • Screening by cytology “Pap smears” has been the standard screening procedure for nearly 50 years in developed countries and has proven efficient in reducing the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer.
