Senior year The senior year is very important! The colleges measure student’s senior year by the quality, number and performance of academic courses. Stay focused!

Help vs. hover • Parents can support and offer suggestions: • no quick fix (time may resolve the issue) be aware of school policies and procedures (sometimes the right answer is “no”) • help with coping skills (stress, disappointment, academic challenges) • reinforce good manners and proper etiquette prepare them now for college • Help with the process and transitioning to self-advocacy • Encourage your student to be independent, colleges will NOT talk to parents about issues. • Students need to advocate for themselves by: • communicating with teachers and counselors • learning how to problem solve and speak to adults • utilizing free resources on campus • understanding that the “easy way out” is not always the answer • becoming more resilient
How to Choose a College How to Choose a College How much can I afford to pay for my education? What is the college’s social life, commute vs. living on campus, politics of the college? What is the school’s academic reputation. class size? Consider the following questions: • Why do I want to go to college? • What do I hope to achieve in college? • What do I want to study or for what job do I want to prepare for? • Do I want to live away or at home? • Do I prefer rural, suburban or urban • areas? • Would I be happier in a smaller college or • larger university?
Tips for college applications • Get unofficial copy of transcript. • Make copy of college apps. before sending. • Keep on-line receipts. • Check emails at least once a week. • Keep the same e-mail address and password. (Make sure it is appropriate) • Don’t wait until the deadlines. • Respond to all letters sent from colleges for info ASAP.

College admissions process • Admission is a two-step process • STEP 1: Eligibility • Subject requirement: A-G Courses • Academic requirement: grades in “A-G” courses • Examination requirement: (SAT/ACT) • To be “eligible” means you meet the minimum requirements to be considered for Freshman Admission • STEP 2: Selection • Selection is the process used to select students when not all eligible students can be admitted. Being eligible and getting in are very different

What’s the difference? Cal states and CSU’s • The UC and CSU have the same pattern of courses. (A-G list) However, UC and CSU have different admissions practices in some cases. • UC: take the top 9% of California’s seniors. • CSU: take the top 30% of California’s seniors

UC personal statement For freshman 2015 UC applicants there will be only two prompts: • Describe the world you come from—for example, your family, community or school—and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. • Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are? • Word Count: 1,000 words total

Letters of Recommendation • Private schools may require letters of recommendation. • UC’s and Cal States DO NOT • Ask Teachers and Counselors and/or people that know you the best. • Give your recommender a brag sheet, at least 2 weeks notice and some appreciation. Deadline to submit a brag sheet to request a letter of recommendation is OCTOBER 31st!

Early Action vs. Early Decision Admissions • Early Action is non-binding. Students are not obligated to enroll in the school if accepted. • Early Decision is an early admission program offered by most colleges and universities. Applicants must commit in advance to the college, thus the term “early decision”. Your acceptance is binding. Make sure you are certain of your decision.

Community colleges • Don’t dismiss the community college system • A student should consider the transfer path if: • They haven’t decided on academic or career goals • Haven’t met requirements for freshman admission • Aren’t ready or able to leave home • Want the affordability of community colleges • Want additional academic preparation or exploration in specific courses • Transfer students have a better chance of being admitted to their dream college if they don’t qualify as a first time freshman.

Transfer Students from the California Community Colleges • About 2/3 of all CSU students were previously CCC students. • 90% of all transfer students in the UC are California Community College students and they are increasing the number of CC transfer admits for this year. • One-third of UC bachelor’s degrees each year go to transfer students. • Many UC campuses offer Transfer Admission Guarantee Program: • No university system enrolls more CCC transfers than the CSU system. • 60% of CSU students are transfers:40% are first-time freshmen

AB 130 Students attending the California State University, the California Community Colleges, or the University of California who are exempt from paying nonresident tuition under the provision described above would be eligible to receive a scholarship derived from non-state funds received, for the purpose of scholarships, by the segment at which he or she is a student.
AB131 • Allows students that meet AB540 to apply and receive financial aid at California public colleges and universities. The types of financial aid these students would be eligible for include: • Board of Governors (BOG) Fee Waiver • Institutional Student Aid: Student aid program administered by the attending college or university (i.e. State University Grant, UC Grant) • Cal Grants.
