  3. Background slv21 project The vision“To provide simultaneous search across the Library’s websites incorporating both internal and external data sources” search.slv.vic.gov.au released mid-Sept 2009

  4. Background • First iteration • within previous website design & navigation • via the ‘Catalogues & Databases’ web page

  5. Background • Includes • Library catalogues • Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aids for manuscript collections • selected subscription ejournal & ebook databases

  6. Background • Second iteration June 2010 • relaunched in new SLV website with the ‘big red search box’ on every page

  7. The potential for all users • Provides search experience more in keeping with user expectations • - ‘search engine-style’ searching – more like “Google” • single search across Library’s information assets • incorporates some web 2.0 features

  8. The potential for all users • Simpler search for the average punter • one search interface to learn, rather than many • natural language – no need to invert names etc • fewer zero hits than traditional OPAC • provides clearer pathways to targeted resources for particular audiences

The potential for all users • Provides a means to “discover” more of the Library’s resources • by aggregating data sources • by exposing more metadata through results facets • start discovery through scoped default search options • - through the serendipity of search across disparate data sources

  10. The potential for all users • More visible journal/newspaper articles & ebooks search • - via ‘Article databases’ tab • consistent search experience – similar to searching Library collections • easier choices for a quick topic search>>> overall should be easier for searchers

  11. The potential for all users • Provides web 2.0 & personalisation features • add reviews or comments & tags • store search results/items (including articles, images, books etc) • set up alerts for saved queries • save items in bookmarking services • check requests from Voyager etc

  12. Benefits for SLV • Highly configurable application with respect to • - collection ‘slices’ or scopes • search indexes • relevance ranking • results facets • record displays • links to external sources such as Google Books, Trove, WorldCat etc

Benefits for SLV • Data configuration managed by librarians (rather than IT staff) • - via web administration module (rather than directly on server) • able to mitigate against imperfect metadata through use of normalisation rules to control search and display >>> provides better search results • each data source can have own normalisation rules if required

  14. Benefits for SLV Greater return on investment, through increased visibility of and ease of access to SLV’s digitising initiatives and licensed eresources collections for both onsite and offsite users

  15. Benefits for SLV • Expose more SLV metadata where users are searching • (for e.g., in search engines, in Trove, in WorldCat etc) • Through use of search engine sitemaps and/or OAI harvest of Primo to expose high value collection metadata not yet contained in network level search systems
