Globalizing the Community College Experience: Local Connections to the Global Economy A Project Briefing for TCC’s Business and International Education Grant Project
Project Background • Grantor is the U.S. Department of Education through the Title VI Business and International Education (BIE) program • Grant was awarded in April 2008 • 23 institutions were awarded • 6 were community colleges • 3 were in Virginia (TCC, RU, and VCU) • Project schedule begins in August 2008 and ends in August 2010 • Project staff include: • Jim Roberts, Sean LaCroix, and Jeanne Natali
Project Objectives Objective #1: Develop the capacity of faculty to convey international business content to students Create professional development program for faculty including curriculum development seminars Develop/Market Optional Global Business Emphasis within TCC’s Business Administration Program Disseminate best practices to build and maintain global business practices to the VCCS
Project Objectives Objective #2: Infuse global perspectives into current business programs Faculty produce and share globally-oriented learning content Develop program content and exchange programs with IHE’s in Brazil and China Collaborate further with educational program partners abroad in scholarly exchanges and study abroad programs
Project Objectives Objective #3: Develop a research program to study region’s international business issues Establish TCC’s Institute of Global Studies Survey international businesses in the region to determine labor force needs Incorporate research findings in development of optional global business program
Overarching Goal To produce business program graduates that are better prepared to compete in an increasingly global world.
Faculty Participant Responsibilities 1 Seminars include speakers from around U.S. and provide participants tools to study global issues. Attend four Globalization Seminars 2 Produce a globalization education module Participants will produce content that will enhance student exposure to global issues. Participants earn $500 in special pay after completion of these steps 3 Evaluate peer educational modules Participants will evaluate peer educational modules and provide anonymous feedback. 4 Consider using educational modules in courses Final modules will be housed in repository and accessible by all faculty. 5 Consider participation in faculty exchange program Some participants will visit Brazil (2009) or China (2010) for a faculty exchange.

Student Participant Responsibilities 1 *Eight students will be selected to enroll. Students will earn 3 credits for course work including delivered online and during Globalization modules. Enroll in and meet requirements of ECO 295 2 Attend three globalization seminars Students will attend seminars where speakers from around U.S. and provide participants tools to study global issues. 3 Produce capstone globalization project Students will produce a final presentation or paper on a global issue. 4 Students will travel to Brazil Students will accompany 6 faculty members on two week exchange to Joinville Brazil and surrounding areas.
Faculty and Student Exchanges Six faculty and six students will undertake a college funded twelve day exchange to Brazil. Some of that time will be spent with our partners, faculty and students from Univille University. The remainder of the time will be spent immersing ourselves in Brazilian culture and economy.
