What Is AP Biology? • Introductory-level college biology experience for high school students • Curriculum set by the college board • End of the year examination for college credit
What Is AP Biology? • “Magic words” – provides access to: • Workshops. • Equipment. • Money – State Initiative, et. al. • Prep time. • Better students.
Is It Elitist? • No, but students need to enter with: • Science skills • Writing skills • Study skills • How do I teach writing and study skills AND biology? • Identify candidates early (Middle School) • Stress skill development
Enter Pre-AP! • Prepare students with skills necessary to take AP biology. • Identify students who may have already fallen in the cracks. • Provide a “hook” for teachers to upgrade their. • Curriculum. • Expectations. • Resources. • Preparation. • Status.
