  2. What It Isn’t • A major shift in the biology curriculum. • An attempt to show you the “right” way to teach. • An excuse for more administrative control over the classroom. • A laundry list of facts to teach. • A specific curriculum for you to follow.

  3. What Is AP Biology? • Introductory-level college biology experience for high school students • Curriculum set by the college board • End of the year examination for college credit

  4. What Is AP Biology? • “Magic words” – provides access to: • Workshops. • Equipment. • Money – State Initiative, et. al. • Prep time. • Better students.

  5. Is It Elitist? • No, but students need to enter with: • Science skills • Writing skills • Study skills • How do I teach writing and study skills AND biology? • Identify candidates early (Middle School) • Stress skill development

  6. Enter Pre-AP! • Prepare students with skills necessary to take AP biology. • Identify students who may have already fallen in the cracks. • Provide a “hook” for teachers to upgrade their. • Curriculum. • Expectations. • Resources. • Preparation. • Status.

  7. More Objectives • Promote the development of vertical teams. • “If you know where you’re going… “. • Communications between grade levels/buildings. • Improve the flow of learning. • Promote excitement and interest in science and especially biology.

  9. The Pre-AP Effect Students Who Complete Pre-AP Courses Are: • Better prepared academically. • More likely to take AP courses. • More likely to specialize in more challenging majors. • Likely to complete more college coursework in four years.

  10. The Pre-AP Effect Students Who Complete Pre-AP Courses Are: • Likely to perform significantly better than students who did not. • More likely to graduate with a double major. • More likely to exercise leadership. • Twice as likely to go into advanced study (ph.D. Programs, medicine and law).
