All About Me • I grew up in a little town in Ohio. • I have been in Florida for 8 years now with my husband. • I fly to Ohio every chance I get to visit with my family.
My Experience • I attended several colleges including Kent State University (Associate’s Degree), The University of Akron (Bachelor’s Degree), and National University of California (Master’s Degree). • My degree is in Early Childhood Education. I am ESOL endorsed and I am Highly Qualified. • This is my 8th year teaching. • I taught 6 years in Kindergarten and 2 years in Second and I have been at Grassy Lake Elementary since it opened.
My Goals • To give your child the academic and social skills they need to be successful this year. • To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. • To help your child develop a love of reading!

Classroom Family Our classroom is a family! We have the following rules to help us get along with each other. 1.Listen when someone else is talking. 2.Keep your hands and feet to yourself. 3.Quietly raise your hand. 4.Use your inside voice 5.Use your walking feet.
Behavior Chart I believe that all my students can behave appropriately in our classroom. Our behavior chart is located on the closet door. Blue=Excellent Day, Green=Ready to Learn, Yellow=Warning, Orange=Time to Think, and Red=Parent Contact/Principal’s Office. Please discuss your child’s behavior each day.
Rewards and Consequences • Free Choice time • Stickers • Treats • Special surprises • Special privileges Students who make inappropriate behavior choices risk missing out on learning opportunities and privileges that we have in class including Fun Friday.
Agenda • The agenda is a great communication tool for us to use. • Agendas should be initialed by a parent each day and returned the next day. (one OOPS! per week) • Behavior color will be indicated in the agenda daily. • Lost agendas cost $5 to replace. • My goal is for us to work together for the best of your child. Together we make a difference!
Homework • A homework packet is sent home every Monday. • All homework is due by Friday each week! Wednesday – Read the story of the week . Students will take their Wonders books home every Wednesday. Please remind them to return the book on Thursday.
STAR Book • Every student has a STAR Book • The STAR Book includes the agenda. Please make sure you check the agenda everyday. • Keep at Home and Return to School section • Weekly Newsletters/Notes and Homework • Reading log section • Please take out the papers on the “Keep at Home” side.

Reading and Phonics • Wonders textbook • Monthly Book-It Projects • Accelerated Reader • Scholastic Book Orders • Superintendent’s Reading Challenge/Read, Believe and Achieve. • Daily Reading Comprehension Review • DIP (Discover Intensive • Phonics for Yourself)
Reading Homework& Building Fluency • Read EVERY DAY! • Echo Reading: You read it with good pace and expression and your child will “echo” you. • Buddy Reading: You read a few lines and then they read a few lines. • Read Aloud: You model good reading. • Read texts many times-to family, pets, toys, plants, etc… • 1 minute timed readings • The more they read, the better they read! • Seeing YOU read is the best example!
Language Arts, Writing, and Spelling • Wonders textbook • Writing – Formal Lessons and Journaling • Daily Language Arts Skills Review • Vocabulary Development Activities • DIP Spelling/Phonics Strategies and Activities
Math • Harcourt textbook • Harcourt Math online games • FASTT Math (computer facts fluency program) • Smiley Math (will begin after Christmas) • Hands-On exploration • Touch Math • Daily Math Skills Review
Science and Social Studies • The textbook will usually be used as a reference source. • These subjects are not graded, but effort is still expected. • Activities are usually hands-on and real world oriented.
Attendance and Absences • Your child should attend school EVERY day! • School officially starts at 8:30 but students can come to class starting at 8:10. • Please let me know if your child will be checked out early. • When your child is absent, be sure to write a note immediately in order for the absence to be excused. • Pre-Approved absences should be completed through the office when possible. • Children miss a LOT when they are absent. I will send home a make-up packet when a student returns.
Uniforms Dress affects student attitude and the learning environment of others and we expect GLES students to dress for success. The established dress code encourages a feeling of belonging and team spirit as well as pride in good grooming and appearance. Additionally, it ensures the safety and well-being of all students and promotes a positive learning environment. Acceptable uniform clothing includes the following: Tops: • Knit polo style, collared shirts or turtlenecks in solid colors • Official Grassy Lake T-shirts and sweatshirts Bottoms: • Shorts, pants, skirts, skorts, jumpers and culottes in navy, black and khaki. Jeans may be worn on Fridays as we celebrate “Spirit Day”. Belts are preferred but optional. Footwear: • Tennis shoes or shoes with an enclosed heel are preferred. Sandals must have a heel strap. Consequences for Non-compliance 1st Offense: Parent Contact 2nd Offense: Parent Contact – Administration Notification 3rd Offense: Lunch Detention 4th Offense: School Plus – After School Detention / In-school Suspension 5th Offense: Out of School Suspension
Dismissal • If your child is to go home another way than he/she usually does, you MUST send in a note or call the front office or your child will go home the way that is listed on the transportation sheet that you filled out at the beginning of the year. All notes/emails should contain a phone number where you can be reached for verification. • According to the Student Code of Conduct, if your child is to ride a different bus home, you MUST send in a written note with a phone number where you can be reached for verification. Email will not be accepted. • If your child’s mode of transportation home changes, please contact the front office and update the transportation sheet.
Field Trips We have lots of fun field trips planned for this year! • We are planning to attend a play in September. • We will visit Discovery Gardens in Tavares in the Spring to learn about plants, animals, and how humans interact in their world.
Field Trips • Leaving campus and attending a field trip is a privilege which must be earned! • If your child receives a discipline referral between the time permission slips go home and the date of the field trip, your child may not be allowed to go on the field trip. • If your child loses a field trip due to a discipline referral, you may not receive a refund for the cost of the trip. • Younger/older siblings are not allowed on field trips. • Information regarding field trips can be found on page 3 of your child’s agenda.
Volunteers and Chaperones If you would like to volunteer in the classroom or plan on chaperoning a trip, the appropriate paperwork needs to be filled out online! The volunteer process will take awhile. Please be patient.
Miscellaneous • We are collecting Box Tops for Education, among many other items, which raise funds for the school. Please be on the “look out” for information about these items. Send them in as you can! • Conference Nights will be scheduled at the end of the first quarter. • Pre-Pay Lunches and track spending at mylunchmoney.com • Keep track of your child’s grades on eSembler. • Birthday Celebrations are limited to the cafeteria and require advance notice. • Scholastic Book Orders are a wonderful way to build your library at home. These go home monthly and can be sent in or done online.
