Analysis notes • Ateya generally agrees with Bok’s argument about freedom of speech in spite of problems that this freedom creates. • Critiques-Where Bok’s rhetoric is (in)effective: • Uses tact and diplomacy in arg style, so as not to alienate readers • Weak on the surface, but might work (flexible) • General enough (adaptable) • Needs more facts to persuade reader Interviews w/ students would have been more effective evidence • Critiques-Where Ateya’s rhetoric is (in)effective • Meet tests (????)-More info needed to understand this • Personal statement effective b/c it gives her credibility (ethos) and shows emotional connection (pathos) (legitimizes, need to speak, • Personal confirms the writer’s argument by showing agreement (shows own position/possibility creates bias) • Showing position also keeps arg open for more discussion for reasonable people to disagree on (key component in academic argument)
