Overview J-1 Visas are required for foreign nationals traveling to the United States, who are financed, in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, by USAID, for training, non-training, and invitational travel events.
TraiNet Issues • Time required • Allow at least 8 weeks time to process a J-1 Visa from start to finish. • US resident international students • Supporting an international student already in the US still requires a J-1 Visa • Challenges • System does not work well for people living in countries without USAID Missions or for people working in countries other than their home country.
TraiNet Issues Required Documentation • Copy of passport • Training location: US University, address, and phone number of contact • Brief description of the activity • Contact person familiar with the invitee, phone number and email address • Letter of invitation to the invitee describing the activity, it’s duration & the SANREM role.
Responsibility The SANREM CRSP team is asking each lead university assume responsibility for implementing the J1 Visa process through SEVIS. They will enter all the required information for host country nationals traveling under there long term research award.
