Ethnicity • Ethnicity and social stratification • Ethnic minorities tend to be worse off than the majority --- health, education, poverty, unemployment, underemployment (3D jobs) • Even their cultures and values can be stigmatised and denigrated • Orang Asli in Malaysia, Native Americans and African-Americans in USA, First Nations peoples in Canada

  4. Gender • Inequalities between men and women in terms of power and wealth • Patriarchy (a society where males dominate females) • Sexism • Feminization of poverty?

  5. Age • Ageism • Calling elderly people “senile” etc

  6. Location • Where people come from • Rural versus urban • Michael Lipton --- urban bias • Poor countries versus rich countries

  7. Education • People who are educated tend to be better off than those who are less educated • Better health for example • In US, college graduates earn much more than high school graduates 7

  8. Marital status Single mothers are often in difficult situations. After divorce, many women experience downward mobility. Must work and also take care of young children – the double burden of women. Also called the Super mom Syndrome. Daycare in USA can be difficult to find or expensive 8

  9. Religion • Prejudice and discrimination against people because of their religion • Anti-semitism --- against Jews • Against Muslims --- France, USA, Burma/Myanmar • Among Hindus in India – against outcastes (Dalit). Caste discrimination. 9
